Ford has brought back the Iconic Splash name after over 25 years. Back in the ’90s, the Splash name was associated with the Ranger Pickup Truck and was offered a different cosmetic look from the standard Ranger. The same is repeated for modern times as well. Last September, Ford announced the return of the Ranger Splash Package and the Splash Limited Editions, which come in one-time-only color options that will drop every few months. The new 2022 Ranger Splash Limited Edition’s colors include Snow Edition, Forest Edition, and Sand Edition.

The Ford Ranger is a capable full-size pickup truck with a tremendous legacy and a cult fan following. The Splash Limited edition only takes that further as they bring exciting new colors and will be limited to 500 units per color scheme.

In 2021, the Splash Edition was offered in a striking orange color scheme with black decals, boasted unique matte black 18-inch wheels, and a stylish interior that continued the orange and black theme. The special trim package is a throwback to the '90s Ranger, which Ford offered the retro package. Ford will offer three new color packages this year: Snow Edition, Forest Edition, and Sand Edition.

The first limited-run offering is the Lariat Ranger Splash - Snow Edition. As the name suggests, it is based on the Lariat trim of the Ford Ranger. Magnetic accents and Avalanche grille nostrils enhance the Avalanche exterior paint color. There are also Unique ebony leather-trimmed seats with Ash Gray accent stitching and carbon-styled tuxedo stripes and bolsters, with additional black accents highlighting the interior. There will be a limited run of only 750 Splash Snow Edition vehicles.

The second of the limited-run offerings is the XLT Ranger Splash - Forest Edition, which will be based on the XLT trim of the Ford Ranger. Metallic accents and red grille nostrils accompany the Forged Green exterior paint color. This vehicle also features ebony seats featuring Ash Gray accent stitching and carbon weave tuxedo stripes and bolsters, with additional black accents highlighting the interior. The seats in this trim are made of cloth instead of leather. There will be a limited run of around 500 Splash Forest Edition vehicles.

The final limited-run offering is the XLT Ranger Splash Sand Edition based on the XLT trim of the Ranger. Red grille nostrils enhance the Desert Sand exterior paint color. This trim also features cloth seats, all black and ash gray stitching, carbon-finished tuxedo stripes and bolsters, and additional black accents highlighting the interior. There will be a limited run of around 500 Splash Sand Edition vehicles. All these trims give the Ranger a unique look and make them stand out from the fleet of standard Rangers all around.

Since the Splash Package is restricted to cosmetic changes, the Ranger remains the same as the standard models underneath the skin. It comes equipped with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 270 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque. It is mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission and offers RWD as standard and four-wheel drive as an option. This engine operates smoothly and delivers much of its torque at lower rpm, which helps the Ranger lunge off the line and up to speed with a sense of urgency, even when towing or hauling. The dash from 0 to 60 mph takes about seven seconds.

The Ranger still boasts impressive towing figures, the maximum payload rating of 1,860 pounds is available with the rear-wheel-drive SuperCab model. This rating falls to 1,650 pounds for the four-wheel-drive SuperCab. The Ranger SuperCrew can tow up to 1,770 pounds in rear-wheel-drive models and 1,560 pounds in four-wheel-drive models. The fuel efficiency figures are 21 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. The fuel efficiency drops to 20 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway when paired with a four-wheel-drive setting.

Ford has priced the Ranger aggressively. The standard Ford Ranger starts at $25,500 for the base LX trim, the XLT starts at $29,550, and the top-of-the-line Lariat trim comes at $33,590. The XLT and the Splash package are offered only with the XLT and the Lariat trim. It comes with a price premium of $1,495 over the standard car.

The Splash edition of the Ranger might serve as the last few Rangers to roll out before the launch of the next-generation Ford Ranger, which has already been revealed and is set to go into production in 2023. The Splash edition is a name associated with the heritage of Ford, and it justifies its premium aura over a standard vehicle. The Ford Ranger has always been an iconic vehicle for the company, and the Splash Limited Edition makes it even more special for the masses.
