Indian is one of the oldest motorcycle brands and has been a trusted name for more than a century. For the year 2022, Indian has launched the FTR 1200 with a similar engine but with different specifications. Three of the four models will be equipped with 17-inch sport tires and a lower seat and handlebar, putting them squarely in the performance standard category known as sport nakeds. The fourth model is the FTR Rally, with 18-inch rear and 19-inch front tires. Categorically, the trim levels are named as the basic FTR, FTR S, FTR R Carbon, and FTR Rally.

While all the trims of the FTR 1200 possess the genes of Indian motorcycles from before, their updated specs put them way ahead of the competition. Here’s a glimpse at the 2022 Indian FTR 1200.

The company’s flat-track models inspire the styling of the FTR 1200, and each trim has been designed keeping the street practicality in mind. Built on the trellis frame, each model is unique in terms of exterior styling. In general, the bike has a sculpted front fender, and the foil-shaped uprights are designed to deflect the wind around the forks to facilitate low drag. The frame and body are lightweight to limit the unsprung weight. Customers can choose carbon fiber components from accessory options to make the bike even lighter.

The base model FTR is garnished with Matte Black and Red Accents, whereas the FTR S is featured with Matte and Gloss Paint options with Titanium Akrapovic Mufflers. The FTR Rally has received Titanium Smoke paint with Rally windscreen and Pro Taper Tracker handlebars. The FTR R Carbon is the top model that features all of the S plus carbon fiber components, including the tank cover, front fender, and headlight nacelle.

The dimensions of the FTR 1200 models are identical except the FTR Rally model. The overall height of the motorcycles is 51.1 inches, with a seat height of 30.7 inches. Whereas the FTR Rally is 53.9 inches in height and its seat height is 32.1 inches. All the models have a 60-inch wheelbase. The gross weight of the FTR models is 482 lbs, except the FTR Rally, which weighs 497 lbs.

The trellis frame body of the base FTR and FTR S model is dampened by 430mm ZF Sachs Fully Adjustable Inverted Telescopic Cartridge Fork at the front and ZF Sachs Fully Adjustable Piggyback IFP at the rear. The FTR Rally has a 43 mm inverted Telescopic Cartridge Fork at the front and a Monotube IFP suspension at the rear. The FTR R Carbon comes with 43 mm Ohlins Fully Adjustable Inverted Telescopic Cartridge Fork at the front and Ohlins Fully Adjustable Piggyback IFP at the rear.

The braking power is aided by Brembo Dual 320mm t5 Rotor 4 Piston Calipers for the front wheels and Brembo Single 260mm t5 Rotor 2 Piston Calipers for the rear wheels. All the FTR models offer a smooth and sporty ride with their top-notch racing tires. The FTR Rally model has a 19-inch Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR front wheel and an 18-inch rear tire. The rest of the models ride on 17-inch Metzeler Sportec M9 RR front and rear wheel tires.

A Mighty Indian Engine

Despite all the differences between the models, each trim is powered by the same engine. For 2022, the FTR 1200 is powered by a 1,203cc liquid-cooled V-Twin engine with a closed bore fuel injection system. The maximum power output of the engine is 120 HP and 87 lb-ft of torque at 6000 RPM.

The transmission is powered by a 6-speed transmission system with assist and slip multi-plate clutch. To reduce heat accumulation, a cylinder deactivation mechanism and improved heat channeling are introduced too. With the throttle closed and the engine speed below 2,200 rpm, the system is triggered when the engine temperature reaches 176 degrees Fahrenheit. When the bike is in an idle position, this mechanism turns off the back cylinder. This effectively reduces the engine heat, resulting in a calmer and more comfortable riding experience.

The 2022 Indian FTR 1200 is a compact motorcycle with aggressive styling. The color scheme for each model highlights its rugged and tough nature. Indicating the model number, every trim is equipped with the same 1200 cc engine, which is powerful enough for a flat-track race bike. The starting price of the base model FTR is approximately $12,999, whereas the highest trim FTR R Carbon, has a price tag starting at $16,999. The FTR S and FTR Rally fall somewhere between the range of $13,999 to $14,999.
