Commonly mistaken for the famous Formula 1 team whose founder name they share, McLaren Cars came into existence in 1985, under the careful control of Ron Dennis. Although the supercar company has collaborated on other models notably for Mercedes, the first true McLaren road car launched in 1992.

It would be a further 18 years before the carmaker under the McLaren Automotive name would return to building cars. The final assembly takes place at the manufacturer's headquarters in Woking, with engines, chassis, and other major components produced offsite.

Unveiled in 1992, the Gordon Murray designed F1 was McLarens first production supercar spanning 7 years and 106 cars completed. Unique among supercars the F1 with its triple seat cockpit and all-carbon-fiber chassis remains highly collectible with examples fetching $15 million.

9 McLaren MP4-12C/Spider (Sports Series)

Launched as the MP4-12C before reverting to just 12C, McLaren's new supercar arrived in 2011 as a direct rival to Ferrari's 458 models. Opting for a more efficient 3.8-liter turbocharged V8 producing 592hp delivered a sub-3-second 0-60mph time and a maximum of 207mph. Although performance and value are excellent, many owners feel the 12C lacked character.

McLaren Automotive based in Surrey needed to develop and test the 12C, opting for the local test track in Dunsfold, famous for being the home of Top Gear UK.

8 McLaren P1/P1 GTR (Ultimate Series)

Another limited-edition hypercar, the P1 launched in 2013 with a maximum of 375 examples scheduled to be built, selling out within one month of the debut. Adopting the M838TQ V8 engine from the 12C accompanied by McLarens E-Motor boosted output to 903hp, powering the p1 to 62mph in 2.8 seconds a top speed of 217mph. Subsequent P1 GTR models (58 produced) featured a small power increase to 986hp, with prices to invited buyers listed at $3.36 million.

Originally listed for $1.5 million some owners sold their P1 even before taking delivery often doubling their investment.

7 McLaren 650S / 675LT (Sports Series)

Developed to replace the 12C on which it is based, the 650S externally is very similar, most of the changes under the skin to increase performance and improve handling. Updates to the suspension set-up improve ride comfort and reduce body roll, while a small engine update boosts total power output to 641hp. How effective are the updates? The 650s can sprint to 125mph in 8.4 seconds, a full second faster than the F1.

Further updates produced the 675LT, a light-weight track-focused edition shedding 75kgs and boosting power to 666hp. Externally easy to identify with the "Long Tail" rear spoiler.

6 McLaren 570S/570GT (Sports Series)

Following McLaren's naming format the 570S launched in 2015 with 562hp (570PS) to form the entry model in the company's line-up. Intended to be a daily driver the 570S focuses on comfort and greater internal space, though the brand's sporting pedigree is still evident with a maximum speed of 204mph.

Spawning several variants in its production life, with model designations derived from their respective power outputs, models included the 570S, 570 GT4, 570 Sprint, 540C, and forming the basis for the later 600LT.

5 McLaren 720S/765LT (Super Series)

Specializing in sports cars McLaren evolves their line-up to launch newer models, the 720S is claimed to be 90% new compared to the 650S it replaces, though some of the technology is carried over. Increasing its engine to 4-liters along with a modified ECU provides 710hp, while 0-62mph remains around 3 seconds the 720S has a higher top speed of 212mph. In a change from earlier models, the 720S features a new front end replacing the P1 styled design of previous models.

Mid-life updates are a common reason for sportier models, the 765LT an evolution of the 720s, with power, boosted to 765hp improves acceleration to 125mph by 0.6 seconds recording a time of 7.2 seconds.

4 McLaren 600LT/620LT Spider (Super Series)

From every angle other than the view from the rear, the latest 600LT model is indistinguishable from the 570S, though 23% of the car is new in the important oily parts. Under its skin engineers have shaved 200lbs from the 600LT, with lighter wheels, suspension, and braking systems accounting for 50% of the savings. Updating the ECU and modified camshafts yield 592hp producing a top speed of 204mph while its 0-62mph remains around 3 seconds.

3 McLaren Senna (Ultimate Series)

Available in standard and GT-R spec, though the latter is not suitable for public roads both models belong on the track. As is normal for McLaren the same basic V8 engine (M840TR) is utilized in another state of tune producing 789hp resulting in the Senna's top speed of 211mph.

2 McLaren Speedtail (Ultimate Series)

A modern take on the original F1, the Speedtail shares its unique triple-seat cockpit layout with its diver occupying a central driving position. Utilizing a revised version of the company's V8 engine and E-Motor producing 1035hp, McLaren's test figures suggest a top speed of 250mph while scorching to 186mph takes 12.8 seconds.

Like its predecessor the F1, McLaren is only producing 106 examples of its Speedtail with prices starting at $2 million guaranteeing exclusivity.

Unlike other ultimate series models, McLaren's Elva is not about maximum performance or even the fastest acceleration times, but more about driver involvement. Make no mistake the Elva has more power than the Senna with 800hp but being open-topped with no windshield drag plays a part. Despite these claims, 0-62mph comes up in 3 seconds with a claimed maximum of over 200mph.

Planned production like most of McLaren's "Ultimate" series cars is limited with 399 examples scheduled for completion carrying a price tag of $1.7 million.
