According to BaT, as per the paperwork on the car, this 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 entered the United States after Solar Productions—actor Steve McQueen’s film company in Hollywood, California, bought it in the same year.

At the time, allegedly, McQueen was resentful of all the paparazzi attention his relationship with actress Ali McGraw attracted. He found the 300 SEL to be fast, and also a tad anonymous, so he bought one.

It was allegedly kept and driven by McQueen until he passed in 1980. This very car was also on BaT in 2007, selling for $45,100 at the time with a total of 13 bidders. Later, it went to Kienle Automobiltechnik in Germany for a 2012–2013 refurbishment, and the receipts of the same show an excess of €125k ($136,500).

The odometer reads 81,000 miles, not bad for a classic. Refinished in black, it also has a sliding sunroof as well as black upholstery on the insides. It also boasts air conditioning and a Becker cassette stereo.

The 300 SEL runs on a 6.3-liter M100 V8. The overhaul includes a refreshed engine bay as well as a rebuilt steering pump reservoir, and the fuel pump for the mechanical injection system. Welding of the underside cracks and replacement of various hoses, fuel lines, and gaskets was part of all the refreshment, as was a recharge of the air-con and wiring repairs.

The car now rides on 14″ Bundt wheels, as well as a reworked air suspension and redone brakes. The black interiors now wear renewed floor insulation. At the time of writing this article, the current bid stands at $33,000 with nine bidders on the floor, although the final bid is still 11 days along.

For a car that’s part of Hollywood, a classic, and one that has undergone more than $100,000 in refurbishing, this is dirt cheap. As McQueen said it: “Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.” The moral of the story is, don’t wait to bid…
