A family of three was saved from a speeding Jeep after it was T-boned at the last second by a Chevy Cruze.

This is one of those extremely rare instances where two wrongs do make a right. Well, there was really only one wrong, and that was the Jeep Renegade running a red light while the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Everyone else was just following the rules, but instead of an entire family being killed there were just a few minor injuries and the bad guy getting carted off to jail.

The footage you see below is from a traffic light camera at an intersection in Phoenix, Arizona on October 14th at 10:10 PM. You can see a family of three, including a 1-year-old infant in a stroller, just starting to make their way across the intersection as other vehicles are turning left.

Then, a speeding Jeep Renegade can be seen running through the intersection and ignoring the red light. The crossing family is caught completely unaware and would have been directly in the path of the Renegade if it weren’t for another car, a black Chevy Cruze, crossing the intersection at the exact same moment.

Rather than the Renegade reducing the family of three to a red smear on the pavement, the Cruze T-bones the Renegade away from the family. It doesn’t look like this was done intentionally and it was just dumb luck that prevented a larger tragedy.

According to the Associated Press (by way of Autoblog), the Renegade driver was Ernesto Otanez Oveso, 28. He was later arrested on a string of charges, including DUA, aggravated assault, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He apparently tried to flee the scene on foot and threatened a witness with a knife in order to prevent them from talking to the police. Then, when the police searched the wreck of his car, they found a gun.

The family driving in the Chevy Cruze were all treated for minor injuries but got away mostly unscathed.

Phoenix is apparently the US capital for pedestrian fatalities with the highest death toll in US cities with over 10,000 residents. A study found that Phoenix's wide streets, high speed limits, and older street design make it a fine place to drive, but a terrible place to walk.
