The line between an all-out superbike and a thoroughly capable naked motorcycle is getting blurrier by the day. In hindsight, this was to be expected. As performance barriers are hit, the natural next step is for sport bikes to take a step up with bigger displacements and higher power outputs. And that's precisely the case now with a lot of sport bikes.

UPDATE: 2024/01/07 02:27 EST BY RAUNAK AJINKYA

Given the sheer number of options available on the market today in terms of naked superbikes, it was imperative that this list be updated to include a few more options that need to be on every serious buyers' list.

Manufacturers like BMW and MV Agusta, typically known to occupy top spots when it comes to their superbikes, are now seeing frighteningly fast naked sport bikes from the likes of Honda, Yamaha, and KTM, among others, breathing heavily down their necks. The ultimate winner in all of this is the enthusiast and the buyer, who can now access performance without any compromise. And with that, here's our list of some seriously quick, very capable naked bikes that you can legitimately consider as an alternative to superbikes.

How we got our model selections: To compile this list, HotCars scoured every motorcycle manufacturer's portfolios for their naked bike offerings. Large displacements, considerable power outputs, and frightening top speeds were used as criteria to narrow the list down further. It should also be noted that some of the motorcycles on this list are no longer in production but can easily be found on the second-hand market.

While most of the naked bikes in the market, especially the Japanese ones, have made use of older generation engines from their sportbikes and de-tuned them accordingly to create their naked motorcycle offerings, Yamaha has decided to take an alternate route by using the same cross-plane as the modern YZF-R1 to create the Yamaha FZ-10.

Soon to be called the MT-10, the FZ-10's engine has hardly been altered. Relaxed ergonomics and the additional unavailability of aerodynamic fairings make it slightly less aggressive than the R1. However, it is still an extremely powerful and fast motorcycle that can reach a maximum speed of 155.3 mph. Powered by a liquid-cooled, 998cc engine, the FZ-10 can produce 160.19 hp in power output and 81.1 lb-ft in torque. Although people can't stop staring at certain Yamaha cruiser bikes, the FZ-10 initiates a similar response.

Yes, Honda makes some of the most reliable motorcycles in the world. That said, motorcycles like the CB1000R prove they're quite handy at making quick motorcycles.

This particular naked features some amazing retro design and an engine with a bit of pedigree. In fact, it wouldn't be a stretch to suggest that the CB1000R is a dark horse among the established lot. Its claimed top speed may be just the starting point on this list, but viewed in isolation, that's still a speed most riders would be fearful of accessing. In simpler terms, the CB1000R makes for a tremendously quick naked.

Ruling the naked bike market for over 20 years, the Ducati Monster 1200 has become a modern icon easily recognized and loved by bikers. While the Monster range offers a lot of options, the Testastretta, 1,200cc, V-twin powered Monster 1200 has to be the best in the segment.

Offering a healthy dose of practicality, robust road presence, usability, and sports performance, the 147 hp engine of this naked motorcycle does not fail to impress. The further availability of a 152 hp 'R' version simply sweetens the deal. While there are some surprisingly slow Ducati motorcycles, the normal Ducati Monster 1200 R is not one among them.

The MT-10 is a master-stroke by Yamaha. What it is, is essentially a tech marvel by the Japanese giant. Calling it a toned-down R1 wouldn't be wrong, but at the same time, it's got enough going on to stand on its own two wheels.

Its crossplane crank engine puts out some serious numbers, and it's reportedly extremely nimble and agile around the bends. And at the same time, it's also meant to be comfortable and easy to get on with. Trust Yamaha to create something as complex yet so appealing simultaneously. No wonder, then, that it bagged HotCars' Best Japanese Motorcycle Of 2024 award.

Being one of the top Aprilia motorcycles, the Tuono V4 1100 is powered by an exceptional V4 engine that produces 175 hp and a peak torque of 89 lb-ft. A race-oriented chassis, exceptional brakes, and suspension further sweeten the deal. Surprisingly, the Tuono V4 is just as comfortable on the streets, although reaching its estimated top speed of 162 mph is not advisable in city traffic.

Equipped with a remarkably powerful LC8 powerplant, the KTM Super Duke 1290 R is a beast of a machine that can make certain sportbikes seem like a toy. The 1,301 cc engine is, in fact, the firm's best LC8 engine that can produce an incredible power output of 180 hp and an incredible torque of 103 lb-ft.

Furthermore, the engine can reach 0-60 mph in just 2.6 seconds, making it one of the fastest naked bikes that money could buy. However, the availability of traction control with lean-angle sensitivity, cornering ABS, gadgets from Bosch, ride-by-wire, choice of having a quick shifter, and selectable riding modes makes the KTM Super Duke R 1290 approachable for the average motorcyclist as well.
