What's the point of a performance car? Well, the obvious answer is that it needs to be fast and handle well, but there's a lot more to it than that. Supercars, sports cars, and luxury vehicles are most often bought as status symbols, intended to display their owner's enviable wealth and impeccable taste. The trouble is, in the quest for performance, there's a surprising number of carmakers out there who forget that they need to make their cars look good too.

Now, this isn't always a dealbreaker, as the McLaren Senna wasn't a good-looking car but made up for it with cutting-edge aerodynamics and a highly desirable brand name. But, more often than not, performance cars that look ugly don't tend to sell well, as their millionaire owners simply don't want to be seen driving one. These ten cars might all be very fast, but even if we had the money, we wouldn't want to be seen in one.

10 Weber Faster One

A Swiss startup with global ambitions, Weber promised big things when it debuted the Faster One in 2008. The car was going to beat the Veyron and become the world's fastest production vehicle, while also becoming one of the most expensive new vehicles of the era, with a starting price of 1.6 million Swiss Francs.

The biggest problem, apart from its entirely unproven claims, was that it looked hideous. From the front, it looked like a badly-drawn caricature of a supercar, and from the side, it was no better, with a squashed rear end that looked out of place with the rest of the car's proportions.

9 Mitsuoka Orochi

A list of ugly supercars isn't complete without the Mitsuoka Orochi, the most infamous offering from the oddball Japanese carmaker. It's based on a Honda NSX, but it's been heavily restyled, giving it an almost cartoonish look.

The car was produced from 2006 until 2014 and became a niche hit in its home country of Japan. It's certainly a unique-looking vehicle, but that's about the only good thing we can say about it.

8 Tramontana XTR

The Europeans usually lead the way when it comes to bare-bones track day specials, but this boutique Spanish sports car has some catching up to do. It's an awkward design that looks cluttered and messy, a far cry from the streamlined curves of its leading rival, the BAC Mono.

It's shockingly fast thanks to an 875 hp twin-turbo V12 from Mercedes-AMG, but that didn't stop it from being labeled, "the strangest car ever made", by UK motoring show Fifth Gear. The company has only managed to sell a handful of these cars since its launch in 2015, and with a face like that, it's easy to see why.

A small startup hailing from Bulgaria, Sin Motors attracted attention for all the wrong reasons when they unveiled their S1 supercar in 2018. Articles from the time suggested that it might be the ugliest car ever made and well, they might have a point.

The S1 saw some success in local racing competitions and proved itself to be a real contender in terms of pure performance, but it's hard to imagine one of these rolling out of a private garage in Monaco. It looks cheap and tacky, and its contorted design seems to be deliberately as ugly as possible.

6 Consulier GTP

Warren Mosler might be better known in American supercar circles for his eponymous Mosler Automotive company, but before that he had designed a different car, the Consulier GTP. The Consulier was seriously fast and impressed critics and buyers, despite its ugly design.

A light-hearted challenge from Mosler led to a high-profile spat between Consulier and Car and Driver magazine, and a few years after that Mosler closed Consulier altogether. The car was mildly successful in terms of sales, but it would have probably been a bigger hit if Mosler had put more effort into its looks as well as its performance.

5 Gemballa Tornado 750 GTS

Gemballa is a company known for its divisive styling and over-the-top tuning packages, but even for them, the Tornado 750 GTS is an extreme car. The Tornado started life as a Porsche Cayenne, which would then be sent to Gemballa and rebodied with this frankly horrific body kit.

Its engine was upgraded to make 750 hp, making this one of the fastest SUVs of its day when it debuted in 2009. Its hideous styling didn't seem to deter buyers, as all 50 Tornados made were quickly sold, but we wouldn't be caught dead in one.

4 Panoz Abruzzi

American sports car brand Panoz decided to make a car for the European market in 2011, but for some reason, they decided to make it the ugliest car they had ever produced. The Abruzzi was shown off at a variety of exclusive Euro shows and events, but unsurprisingly, it didn't draw much interest.

It's almost laughable to think that Panoz genuinely believed they could compete with the scores of Ferraris and Lamborghinis with a car that looked like that, and yet they continued to try and drum up sales before eventually shelving the project in 2014. It's not known how many cars were built, but the retail price was reportedly north of $450,000.

3 IFR Automotive Aspid

Like the Tramontana, the IFR Automotive Aspid is a boutique car from Spain that's very fast but very ugly. It featured a Honda engine from the S2000 that was upgraded to make 270 hp.

They were clearly aiming for Caterham territory with the design of the Aspid, but the roof looks like a last-minute add-on and the bug-eyed headlights don't help things either. It's fair to say that the Aspid isn't going to be knocking the Caterham Seven off its throne any time soon.

2 Ferrari F12 La Revoluzione Mansory

Mansory has always been a headline-grabbing tuner, with an ability to enrage purists of every kind. The Ferrari F12 La Revoluzione isn't even one of their wildest designs, but it's certainly crazy enough to make any passersby stop and stare, although not in a good way.

The stock F12 is a very traditionally designed Ferrari, but the Mansory version throws that styling out the window and replaces it with an ugly body kit and garish red paint job. It's surely one of Mansory's most tasteless designs to date, but it almost certainly won't be their last.

Very few performance cars ever manage to screw up the fundamentals of car design quite as completely as the Sbarro Autobau. There's almost nothing redeeming about it, as every new angle of the car brings a new glaring flaw.

It's too long, too low, too messy, too tacky... the list goes on and on, but it's worth taking a second look at it just to fully appreciate how ugly this car is. With a 500 hp 12-cylinder Ferrari engine, it might have been quick, but that won't save the fact that the Autobau is possibly the biggest automotive eyesore of the past twenty years.
