Let's face it, today's cars are stupidly fast, albeit in a good way. It seems as though every month or so, we see a speed record of some kind being shattered by some hypercar manufacturer, only to see that record be broken in the not too distant future. Typically, this back and forth battle is between two specific vehicle manufacturers: Bugatti and Koenigsegg. Oddly enough, however, it is neither one of the manufacturers; instead, that honor goes to the SSC Tuatara.

While comparing the top speeds of the world's hypercars is definitely interesting, there is yet another metric that can also yield similarly intriguing results. We are, of course, talking about how fast a car accelerates. Specifically, we are referring to how fast a vehicle can go from 0-60 MPH.

Depending on how you look at it, this achievement can be even more difficult to accomplish, as you actually have to get the power to the ground and keep it there. As you can imagine, electric cars with their monstrous amounts of torque have held this crown more and more often in recent years. Despite the fact that this will surely eventually become the norm, we are thankful to say that the current leader is a supercharged petrol-powered beast; and it's called the Ultima Evolution Coupe.

Let's get into why this savage hypercar is currently the fastest production car at the drag strip.

Thanks To Its Carbon Fiber And Fibreglass Diet, It's Very Light

One of the greatest hallmarks of the Ultima Evolution Coupe is the fact that it tips the scale at just a hair over a ton. Ultima was able to accomplish this feat of lightweightness by outfitting the body with only fiberglass and carbon fiber. Additionally, to add safety and still keep the curb weight down, the boutique supercar maker has provided the Evolution Coupe with a tubular design steel space frame for rigidity.

Speaking of the body and chassis, you should also know that the Evolution Coupe can be purchased as either a kit car or a fully assembled vehicle. The former will cost you about $98,690, while the latter will fetch you around $143,560 (basically, it's a bargain supercar). Though it is quite a steep difference in price, try to keep in mind that we are talking about the fastest accelerating car on Earth (how much do you really trust your building skills again?).

Its Aerodynamics Would Make An F1 Car Proud

Thankfully, not only is the car light, but Ultima also gave the Evolution the aero package needed to stop it from taking off into the sky. This has been achieved by outfitting the "budget-friendly" supercar with both a large rear wing and a front splitter. Together, these parts work to push the car into the ground and keep it firmly planted on the road.

Additionally, they have provided the spunky coupe with a very capable suspension setup that works in tandem with the aerodynamic bits. Specifically, Ultima has mounted TIG welded double unequal length wishbones, as well as fully adjustable custom-made coil spring dampers. This allows the street-legal racer to be both good on the track as well as quite comfortable when you're driving down city streets.

And Of Course, There's That Monstrosity Of A Power-Unit

Finally, we have arrived at the feature that we have all been waiting for: The engine. Like most cars in its class, Ultima has opted to mount the engine smack dab in the middle of the Evolution Coupe. As for what kind of power unit fills up this space, you'll have the option of including a 6.2-liter LS3 V8, 7.0-liter LS7 V8, or even a 6.8-liter supercharged LS V8. Just know that if you truly want the fastest accelerating car on Earth, you'll have to get yourself the latter of these motors.

Those who have more money than sense and opt for the supercharged V8 engine will have on tap 1,020 HP and 920 lb-ft of torque. As a result of these gargantuan power figures, the Ultima Evolution Coupe can lurche from 0-60 MPH in a shocking 2.3 seconds. Further, if you continue to bury your hoof into the carpet, you'll eventually see that little red needle go all the way up to 240 MPH.

But How Long Will It Stay The World's Fastest Accelerating Car?

So, there you have it; the world's fastest accelerating car is a vehicle that you can not only build yourself but also get at a fraction of the cost of a normal supercar. Surely, it will be quite some time before this record is beaten, right? After all, how much faster can you really go from 0-60 MPH?

Well, believe it or not, Tesla might actually be taking that crown away from the Evolution Coupe sooner rather than later. Although it has not been officially confirmed, Elon Musk is claiming that the upcoming Model S Plaid edition will be able to go from 0-60 in under 2 seconds. And that's not even their fastest upcoming model!
