Over the last decade, the world's police car fleet has grown astonishingly diverse. On the one hand, it makes sense for police departments to arm themselves with more speed, muscle, and technology for the dramatic police pursuits that occasionally make the news. However, some law enforcement institutions have dipped their toes in the fast-evolving automotive industry and spiced up their mundane fleets with ridiculously fast sports cars. Talk about patrolling in style.
Admittedly, preparedness for high-speed car chases is not the only motivation for police departments to bolster their fleets. After all, policing involves more than just running around chasing bad guys. Although the price tags on these cool cars might raise some eyebrows, each institution acquired their vehicles in different ways and dispatched them to serve their communities in various capacities. Nonetheless, regardless of the manner of acquisition or function, these flashy police sports cars boast some serious top speeds.
10 Lotus Evora GT410 - 186mph
In Exeter, UK, the Devon and Cornwall Police Department unveiled a gray Lotus Evora GT410 for their Road Crime Unit. Decked out with high-visibility police markings, the department acquired the supercar on a 12-month loan from the Norfolk-based Lotus UK company.
The Evora GT410 features a supercharged 410hp 3.5-liter V-6 that allows it to accelerate to an impressive 186mph. Despite its ability to bolt from 0 to 60mph in just 3.9-seconds, Devon and Cornwall Police use the Evora GT410 for road safety awareness and increasing community engagement instead of response and patrol work.
9 Spyker C8 Spyder- 187mph
In 2006, Spyker delivered a one-off police version of the C8 Spyder for the Frevoland Police, a rural force in the Netherlands. Considering its uptight law enforcement environment, the hand-built C8 Spyder is a quirky yet unique two-door convertible that stands out with scissor-style doors.
Under the hood, the Spyker C8 Spyder features an Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V-8 capable of churning 400hp. And despite how far back Spyker built the car, its 186mph top speed is still significantly faster than the cars in most police fleets today.
8 Steeda Police Pursuit Mustang - 200mph
When Steeda Autosports relocated to Valdosta, Georgia, they gifted the Valdosta Police Department a pair of marked Ford Mustangs fully kitted with their Police Pursuit Package. Like Steeda's Q-series high-performance track and street models, the Steeda Police Pursuit Mustang features world-class enhancements to bolster chassis stiffness, acceleration, braking, cornering ability, and fuel economy.
In addition, the Mustangs boast a Whipple 2.9-liter supercharged that amps up the output to a stunning 777 hp and 655 lb-ft of torque. Although the police department utilizes the 200mph top-speed police cars for traffic patrol, police intercept operations, and emergency responses, they are also a cool way to connect with local citizens at car events and shows.
7 Lamborghini Huracán - 201mph
After the success of the Gallardo police cars in Italy, Lamborghini gifted the Italian Highway Patrol a few more Huracáns to cruise the highways. Painted in official light blue police colors, the Huracans feature practical upgrades such as gun holsters, police radio, camera, computer, and portable extinguishers.
The Lamborghini Huracán houses a 610hp 5.2-liter naturally-aspirated V-10 engine that lets it hit 60mph in 2.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 201mph. Besides highway patrol and high-speed pursuits, the Lamborghini Huracán are outfitted with a refrigerated frunk and defibrillators for medical emergencies. As reported by The Drive, a police Huracán was once used to transport a donor kidney over 300 miles within two hours.
6 Nissan GT-R - 205mph
Every gearhead knows about Japan's legendary street racing scene and the numerous thrilling movies fuelling the underground tuning culture. However, it was bad news for bad guys in Japan when authorities in Tochigi Prefecture received a Nissan GT-R as a donation from a senior citizen in 2018.
Considered the fastest, most powerful car in the Japanese Police fleet, the GT-R boasts a 565hp 3.8-liter twin-turbo with an effective AWD system that pushes it to a top speed of 205mph. The street-legal Godzilla prowls the streets to crack down on traffic violations such as tailgating and speeding, and of course, anyone with the guts to engage in a car chase.
5 Ferrari FF - 208mph
Dubai is a well-known supercar and hypercar haven, and the Dubai Police does its best to blend in with the most impressive supercar lineup of any police department worldwide. Interestingly, the Ferrari FF is one among seven that only the Dubai Police have in their fleet to deter anyone considering breaking the city speed limits.
The Ferrari houses a 651hp 6.3-liter V-12 that allows it to sprint from 0 to 60mph in 3.7 seconds. Unless your supercar can clear 208mph, we suggest you don't get any crazy ideas when this beauty shows up in your rearview mirror. Besides traffic patrol duty, the Ferrari FF also makes appearances in popular tourist spots to promote Dubai.
4 Brabus Mercedes CLS Rocket - 225mph
Germany conducts an annual "Tune It! Safe!" campaign, supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, to draw attention to homologated but safe tuning. Of all the projects, the most potent is the Brabus CLS Rocket police car that debuted at the 2006 Essen Motor Show.
The modified Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class features a 730hp twin-turbo V-12 and can achieve a neck-breaking top speed of 225hp. The Brabus Mercedes CLS Rocket was the world's fastest sedan at the time, but unfortunately, it never made it to active duty.
3 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 - 228mph
In 2015, New Braunfels Police Department rolled out a seized Chevrolet Corvette Z06 as a new member of its vehicle fleet. The sleek 2007 Corvette Z06, dubbed "Coptimus Prime," previously belonged to a drug trafficker in San Antonio with Mexican cartel ties.
Luckily, the New Braunfels Police Department landed on a 1,005hp Corvette with aftermarket racing modifications, capable of a whopping 228mph. On a more disappointing note, the department opted to use the speed demon as a community outreach tool during public events instead of patrolling and high-speed pursuits.
2 Lykan Hypersport - 245mph
The Lykan Hypersport is famous for its silver screen role in the thrilling Fast and Furious 7 film when the crew famously crashed the sports car across two skyscrapers. Determined not to be left behind by their supercar-laden neighbors, Dubai, Abu Dhabi Police Force enrolled the big-screen star from W Motors to their fleet.
The supercar houses a Porsche-supplied 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-6 mid-rear engine tuned by RUF to deliver 770hp and 737lb-ft of torque. With the ability to sprint from standstill to 60mph in 2.8 seconds and bolt to a 245mph top speed, the Lykan Hypersport is easily one of the fastest police cars ever. And if that's not impressive, the hypercar is ultra-rare since W Motors built only seven examples.
1 Bugatti Veyron - 253mph
Dubai's 14-strong fleet of luxury supercars might sound outlandish, but flaunting the world's fastest police car in service is beyond impressive. A 1,000hp 16-cylinder engine powers the Bugatti Veyron, sending it from 0 to 60mph in two and a half seconds.
Despite the astonishing 253mph top speed, the Dubai Police doesn't deploy the $1.6 million Bugatti Veyron for high-speed chases, or many police duties for that matter. According to Major Sultan Al Marri of the General Department of Transport and Rescue in Dubai's police force, the Bugatti cruises around public areas and tourist destinations around the city to break down barriers between the public and the police.
