There was a time when the fastest cars were simply classified as supercars. The first car to carry the supercar tag was the Bentley Speed Six in 1920 when its levels of performance were unmatched in its era. Since then, the fastest cars have been called supercars.

However, today there is a new breed of expensive high-performance sports cars that offer speeds that are unmatched by any of the traditional supercars. These hypercars push the boundaries of technology to bring the performance of racing cars to street-legal vehicles.

A common feature of hypercars is that they use hybrid car technology. These cars are designed to combine the nominal power of their petrol engine with the extra power of an electric motor to produce ridiculous amounts of horsepower. Hypercars are the peak of automotive performance, and here is a list of the fastest hybrid hypercars ever made.

10 Koenigsegg Regera: 255 MPH

The Koenigsegg Regera's name means "to reign" in Swedish, and the car lives up to its name. Only 80 units of the Regera were built and they are the fastest hybrid hypercars on the planet today. The Regera combines its twin-turbo engine with dual electric motors to produce 1500 hp. Enough power to enable the car to reach a top speed of 255 mph. Also, unlike other austere hypercars like the Mclaren P1, the Regera is packed with creature comforts like comfy interiors and Apple CarPlay.

9 Mclaren Speedtail: 250 MPH

The Mclaren Speedtail was launched late 2019 and it is the designated successor to the iconic Mclaren F1. Mclaren built its reputation on a philosophy of only producing cars that push the boundaries of innovation and the Speedtail is no exception. Its unique shape helps the vehicle to reduce downforce as much as possible and this effectively makes the car a lot faster. The Speedtail's twin-turbo engines generate up to 1,036 hp to push the car to a top speed of 250 mph.

8 Koenigsegg Gemera: 249 MPH

The Koenigsegg Gemera is the family-friendly cousin of the Koenigsegg Regera. Cars built by Koenigsegg have traditionally been two-seaters, and the Gemera is the first four-seater vehicle built by the company. However, the fact that the Gemera is family-friendly doesn't mean it isn't built to be fast, really fast. It packs 1700 hp to reach a top speed of 249 mph. Also, the Gemera spots innovative "synchrohelix" doors that make the car easily accessible. It also comes with driver-assistance technology that can take control if the driver is too tired to drive.

7 Mercedes AMG-One: 217 MPH

The Mercedes Formula One team has won the past seven championships and it is only appropriate that the Mercedes AMG-One will be built with the same technology used in Lewis Hamilton's championship-winning Formula One car. Only 275 units of the car will be built and the lucky owners will get a street-legal Formula One car with over 1000hp and a top speed of 217 mph. The AMG-One project is a tribute to Mercedes'  success in the modern era of car racing and it is fitting that Lewis Hamilton (its most successful driver) is fully involved in the project.

6 Ferreri LaFerrari: 217 MPH

A member of the holy trinity of hybrid hypercars that includes the Mclaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder, the Laferrari represents the pinnacle of automotive performance among the cars in Ferrari's lineup. Ferrari arrogantly named the car LaFerrari, which in Italian means "The Ferrari". Why won't they? the Laferrari's V12 engine produces up to 950 hp to reach a top speed of 217 mph. It will also go from 0-124 mph in under seven seconds. Interestingly, there is a viral clip on Instagram that shows the LaFerrari reaching a top speed of 230mph to add more to the lore of Ferrari's current flagship vehicle.

5 Mclaren P1: 217 MPH

Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear famously called the Mclaren P1 "The Widow-Maker" in awe of the undiluted driving performance of the P1. The Mclaren P1 was the fastest car in Mclaren's stable until the Mclaren Speedtail was introduced in late 2019. The P1 is a track-focused hypercar that proved its mettle when it finished first in a race with the other two cars that make up the trinity of hypercars. The P1's engine produces up to 903 hp to push the car to a top speed of 217 mph.

4 Porsche 918 Spyder: 214 MPH

Don't let the 918 Spyder's official top speed fool you, the car packs enough innovative engineering technology to make it a peer of the Mclaren P1 and the LaFerrari. The 918 Spyder has up to 50 electric control units, two electric motors, and a V8 engine that outputs an impressive 875 hp. Also, the 918 Spyder was launched as a plug-in hybrid in 2013, a technology that Ferrari is just adopting in the 2020 Ferrari SP90 Stradale. The Porsche 918 is also the proud owner of the Nurburgring track's lap record, it went around the infamous track in just 6 minutes 57 seconds.

The Sf90 Stradale is the most advanced car ever designed and built by the nerds at Ferrari. It spots the most powerful Ferrari V8 engine ever, it is the first plug-in hybrid ever built by Ferrari, and it is also the fastest road car ever built by Ferrari. That is a lot of firsts. The car packs a V8 engine that combines with three electric motors to produce 769 hp. That much power and Ferrari's engineering prowess means the SP90 Stradale will go from 0-124 mph in 6.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 211 mph.

Aston Martin couldn't standby and let the hypercars from its competitors continue to dominate the headlines, so it decided to build its own hypercar. The Valkyrie is the fastest car ever built by Aston Martin and it doesn't share the typical look of Aston Martin cars. The Valkyrie is the brainchild of a collaboration between the company and Adrian Newey (the head honcho of Red Bull Racing) and the car's unique aerodynamic shape is a testimony to the car racing pedigree of its designers.

1 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid: 192 MPH

The Porshe Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is the hybrid version of the gasoline-powered Porsche Panamera. The E-Hybrid was the predecessor to the all-electric Porsche Taycan and it is quite a beast. The vehicle packs a V8 engine that is combined with an electric motor to produce up to 680 hp. This is enough power to give the car a top speed of 192 mph. The E-Hybrid can be fully charged under three hours and it can be driven purely on electric power.
