Any car enthusiast is familiar with Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson, and James May, from Top Gear fame. While Top Gear remains one of the most popular motoring television shows ever, true fanatics know that this trio went on to create another exceptional motoring show: The Grand Tour. Available on Amazon Prime Video, it can easily be considered one of the best shows for gearheads ever.
Having streamed nearly 40 episodes over the course of four seasons, The Grand Tour has seen its hosts traverse across the world, review some of the most classic, as well as underrated cars that the world has seen, and embark on some exhilarating adventures. While all the episodes have something delightful to provide, some moments or even entire episodes stand out as the greatest and favorite instances that the show has had to offer.
10 Past, Present, Or Future
Supercars have enthralled the world since their inception, and the first episode in the second season of The Grand Tour celebrates this very idea. With the hosts traveling to the beautiful country of Switzerland, we see three supercars that represent the past, present, and future of this unique vehicle segment.
Lamborghini Aventador S driven by Clarkson represents the past, the present sees its flag being donned by a Honda NSX that May drives, and Hammond takes on the future Rimac Concept One. All these cars are driven through the beautiful Swiss Alps in an enthralling drag race. The best moment of the episode has to be Clarkson remarking, "That Rimac just f***s off. I've never seen anything like that," when witnessing the impressive performance of the Rimac Concept One.
9 May's Mud Car
Season 1's 4th episode saw the hosts attempting to make cars using eco-friendly parts to encourage future automobile manufacturers to take a cleaner approach. However, instead of being inspirational, the endeavor turns out to be entirely hilarious.
With Hammond driving a garden for a truck, Clarkson maneuvering a car made using animal bones and skin, and James May seated atop a mud car, things start looking ridiculous at best. May's mud car literally starts to fall apart even before the trio has reached the hotel or even the first task, dropping parts along the way like cow-dung.
8 Battleships
Battleships with cars? Yes, that's right. Leave May and Hammond to their own devices and something as absurd as this is bound to happen. Using G-Wizes as missiles, Hammond and May play their own version of Battleships with old cars.
While Hammond believes he has the upper hand after a few of May's missiles miss their mark, the tables soon turn with May ignoring Richard's bluff and remarking, "Now Hammond is a bit thick, so he would put them on the edges".
7 Petrified In Namibia
Part of a two-part episode named 'The Beach (Buggy) Boys' this episode might seem like fun from the idea of it, but things soon turn quite dangerous as the trio take their modified buggies across the Namib Desert on an off-road adventure covering sand-dunes and rough terrain.
While trying to cover a steep sand-dune, Hammond simply disappears across the edge, as Clarkson makes his way out of his buggy unsure about what he might find on the other side. The swearing and visible panic clearly indicated that this was not a scripted moment. Thankfully Richard was alright, much to Jeremy's and his own surprise. All's well that ends well!
6 Breaking Badly
Cars and water are never a good combination unless the driver happens to be James Bond and the car in question a Lotus Espirit S1. However, Jeremy Clarkson is not one to be daunted by such odds. In an episode that sees the team make two amphibious cars that attempt to break the amphibious car speed record in the UK during the Coniston Speed Week, Jeremy heads the first attempt combining a boat, car, and a jet engine.
He creates something ungodly as far as the idea is concerned. However, the vehicle only manages to travel at 3-4 mph despite the incredible thrust of the jet, much to everyone's amusement. Adding to the list of James May quotes that are still hilarious today, he remarks, referring to the jet propellor starting up "It's going around. Don't look at it."
5 Maseratis In France
Traveling to the Croix-en-Ternois Circuit in France, the trio decided to test three used Maseratis against each other and prove that it was a better purchase than a Ford Focus. While Hammond chose the 430 Saloon, Clarkson decided to select the Bi-turbo S Coupé, and May drove the Zagato Spyder.
Apart from having three classic Maseratis compete against each other in the track, the episode consisted of a hilarious road trip across Northern France with Richard and James driving down the same one-way lane but from the opposite directions.
4 Oh, Canada
The episode 'Oh, Canada', sees Hammond, May, and Clarkson travel to Canada to test the sporting, utilitarian and racing abilities of three modern SUVs. Hammond chose the Porsche Macan Turbo Performance Pack, Clarkson the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, and May the Range Rover Velar.
The episode saw the trio indulge in an epic racing competition traversing the beautiful snowy mountains of Canada. The rough terrain of the Canadian countryside added to the fun and thrill factor of this delightful episode.
3 Bah Humbug-atti
A trip across the Alps from St. Tropez to Turin in a Bugatti Chiron seems like an absolute dream come true, but that is exactly what Jeremy Clarkson does in this episode while trying to live a jet-set driver's life. He provides the audience with incredible facts people didn't know about the Bugatti Chiron, while also indulging in a drag race.
On the other hand, James May tests the Kia Stinger GT in Mallorca and races the car on the mountain roads with longboard riders.
2 Legends And Luggage
The Porsche 917 is one of the greatest Porsches ever made and on its 50th anniversary, Richard Hammond celebrates the car's genius by reviewing it. The episode also consists of legendary British racer Richard Atwood racing the Porsche 917 in the Circuit of Navarra, the same driver who won the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hour using the very same car.
However, the most hilarious part of the episode has to be Clarkson and Hammond testing their motorized suitcases at the London Stansted Airport and knocking down objects and crashing into people in the attempt.
1 Blasts From The Past
Old cars and old motorsport locations have a charm that can never be forgotten and this episode celebrates that with Hammond and Clarkson visiting some of the most iconic race locations across Europe in a classic lightweight Aston Martin DB4 GT and a Jaguar XKSS. While Hammond drives the XKSS, one of the most amazing Jaguars ever made, Clarkson sticks to the Italian Aston Martin.
However, their adventures are soon interrupted by the boastful James May, who claims that his chosen car, the latest Honda Civic Type R, is better than both the cars put together.
