Ferrari has gone beyond futuristic with their F80 Concept, a car that has 1,200 brake horsepower and a 0-60mph time of 2.2 seconds.

Ferrari has molded their long-history from Formula 1 and the 24hrs of Le Mans into the F80 concept. A concept designed by an independent designer named Adriano Raeli, who is an Art Center graduate.

Sub-contracting the design of a car has been done in the past. Something Ferrari has done in the past with Pininfarina. An Italian coach-builder that has been building custom-designed cars since its foundation in 1930. Pininfarina has also designed cars for Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Fiat, GM, Lancia, and Maserati. Recently, Pininfarina has been bought by the Mahindra Group, an Indian multinational conglomerate, and works with multiple Chinese manufacturers.

The F80 is nothing short of eye-catchingly stunning, its sharp and smooth edges seem endless. The car looks fast just standing still, something Ferrari is known for. Just check this Le Mans winner out, the Ferrari 330 P4.

Let's delve into what is underneath that gorgeous styling

Where to start really, the F80 is truly a Christmas list of things you want a supercar to have. From its Formula 1 style body and monocoque shape to its beating heart of an engine. You couldn't have asked for a better list of things to have.

This F80 concept is meant to be the successor to the all mighty LaFerrari, a 6.3-liter F140FE V12. That V12 produced some amazing numbers in its own right. The LaFerrari produced 789 bhp and 161 bhp from its Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) for a total of 950 bhp. Which will push you along nicely along one of Germany's autobahn at 230 mph.

With that said the F80 Concept's engine is meant to be an ever bigger amalgamation of noise, speed, and probably fear. The F80 is set to produce 1200 bhp which is 250 bhp more than the LaFerrari. And 250 bhp extra isn't something to laugh at, 250 bhp will push you along easily in a 4-door saloon. However, it won't be produced by a fire-breathing V12 but a Twin-Turbo V8 Hybrid Engine. So, the design philosophy doesn't just end with the exterior but continues throughout. The F80 will use the lessons learned by its Power Units for Formula 1 and infuse it into a road-going mentalist.

The F80 weighs in at 1762 lbs (799 kgs) and alongside its 1200 bhp, thankfully, the car is designed to generate buckets of downforce to help keep it on the road. Downforce being the opposite to lift, it's a downward-force. Another lesson comes from places like IndyCar and Formula 1. With all this design and power it will enable the deeper-pocketed of you out there to reach a modest 310 mph (498 km/p).

Anyone who is a fan of Ford's GT will recognize that the rear end of the F80 is very similar to that of its American cousin. This is mainly because both cars are designed with aerodynamics in mind. Both cars are directing the air that's flowing over the car to a specific area at the back, to the diffuser. This area is where the car generates most of its downforce, enabling you to corner faster and easier. Smart minds think alike it seems.

This brings up the question of why doesn't Ferrari make limited units and then use the body to race in the 24hr of Le Mans. Especially as the World Endurance Championship (WEC) has created a new class called Hypercar. Any fan of the 24hrs of Le Mans would love to see a modern-day Ford versus Ferrari happen. Notably because of the popularity of the film, which got 4-Oscar nominations.

Well, currently there are no commitments from Ferrari about the making of the F80. As this was more of a 'what if' art design project by Adriano Raeli, you can understand that. But you can be sure that if Ferrari did announce they were going to start building something similar, it would be sold out immediately. The price tag of such a car would definitely limit the potential customer base, but there is the belief, Ferrari really doesn't care about that - right? There are enough people out there with deep enough pockets to afford such a magnificent machine.

If you ever wanted to see what an F80 would look like in the "flesh", all we can give you is a video from Assetto Corsa. Assetto Corsa is a popular racing simulator on PC and console. However, the PC game has built a huge community of modders who are able to bring cars like the F80 to life. Check out the video below as the F80 is shown off around the Top Gear test track.
