Ferrari has been teasing its fans and the automotive world with its upcoming new SUV. While there’s a little the world knows about the new Purosangue, Ferrari wants to make sure the interest in its first-ever SUV keeps on growing. Following an image teaser, the Prancing Horse dropped another bomb – a V12 engine will power the new Purosangue.

Ferrari Plus V12 Equals Tradition

Ferrari and V12 engines are inseparable partners. While the maker of the Italian sports cars also employs other engine types for its vehicles, the V12 mill has always stood out – simply because it represents the pinnacle of the brand. It has been Ferrari’s tradition to power its most exhilarating and most thrilling models with V12 engines. Ferrari has always found a way to shoehorn massive V12 engines under the hood of its sleek sports car.

Thus, it was no surprise when the Italian brand announced on Twitter that its newest model – "born without compromises, unmistakably Ferrari at heart” -- will have a V12 engine as its core. This new engine could be an evolved or revised version of the V12 mill in the Ferrari 812 Competizione. Capable of delivering 830 hp of max output and 510 lb-ft of peak torque, this naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 mill is better than the one found in the 812 Superfast.

A V12 Mill For The Thoroughbred

With Ferrari’s Twitter post, people started to wonder about the identity of this new V12-powered model. All the carmaker V12 models were sports cars, so it makes sense that the latest V12 Ferrari would also be a sports car. In a follow-up tweet, Ferrari said that this vehicle would be a game-changing model that it plans to launch later this year.

Ferrari’s website provided a better clue: “Born without compromise, our new thoroughbred’s bloodline is unmistakably Ferrari at heart.” There is only one upcoming Ferrari that is literally named “thoroughbred”—the Purosangue. Interestingly, “purosangue” is an actual Italian term that means “thoroughbred.”

Furthermore, the new Purosangue is a game-changer for Ferrari, as it is an SUV that the carmaker never had. It will redefine the sports car game for Ferrari.

Ferrari CEO Confirms V12 In The Purosangue

It took Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna to finally confirm that the Purosangue will feature the brand's potent V12 engine, Reuters reported. Speaking after a presentation of the carmaker’s first-quarter reports, Vigna revealed that they tested several options, but only the V12 can provide the performance and driving experience that the market wants.
