Ferrari and Lamborghini are two of the most well known companies in the world mainly for their fancy looking and high performing sports cars. While both have that going for them, they are actually very different.

For starters, Ferrari is 73 years old, 17 years older than its rival, Lamborghini. This age difference, however, isn't even the beginning of the two companies' unique aspects. In fact they couldn’t be any more different for how closely their cars compete in more modern days.

The name Lamborghini was once associated with none other than the tractor industry. Ferrari gained their popularity making high end race cars but Lamborghini did it making farm vehicles, in fact they were so good at this, that the company was able to make a fortune from it. Enzo Ferrari’s cars were actually the reason Ferruccio Lamborghini started making sports cars, later leading to a major rivalry that lives today.

Through all of this the question still lives today-who makes the best supercars?

The ironic truth is that Enzo Ferrari actually created one of his biggest and most difficult rivals to date. Ferruccio Lamborghini was originally the owner of a very successful tractor business; he hadn’t even made a regular car for his brand before. Ferruccio even bought a Ferrari.

The 250 GT he purchased, while it is a great car, started their rivalry. The one he purchased had problems with the clutch, and as a loyal buyer, Ferruccio thought Enzo would be more than happy to make him a car that didn’t have these sorts of problems. The owner of the successful racing company denied his offer, enraging Ferruccio to a point where he decided to make his own sports car, the 350 GT. This was the beginning of the supercar company almost everyone knows of today.

The current day companies have evolved greatly since then, and many changes have happened, with many new car models being released and many, many design improvements.

In 2020, so far, Lamborghini is selling only 3 different car models, however certain models come in different variants, including the Lamborghini Aventador S and Aventador SVJ. Ferrari does manage to top Lamborghini with a whopping 7 different models on the market right now, but this isn’t the whole story. The most seats any modern day Ferrari has is 4, while the Lamborghini Urus SUV can hold 5 depending on your backseat options.

Additionally, certain Ferrari models you can buy now are replacements to a very similar car already on the market, specifically the Ferrari 488 and its newer edition the F8 Tributo, both mid-engine V8’s but completely different cars.

Both companies have at least one current V12 model. Those are the Lamborghini Aventador, the Ferrari 812 Superfast, and Ferrari GTC4 Lusso. The Lusso, however, is a hatchback and doesn’t have the same level of aggression and looks as the other two V12’s.

When you compare the models, it is clear that the Aventador SVJ is better than the 812 Superfast in almost every category. The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ tops out at a maximum speed of 217 miles per hour, while the 812 can only get to 211 and accelerates slightly slower than the Lamborghini.

You do have to consider the price though. The 812, while almost matching the SVJ statistics, starts at $335,000, while the SVJ starts at over $500,000. It could be argued that the Aventador has a much more aggressive look and sounds better, but does all of this justify more than $150,000 difference in price?

There are other models, however. The Lamborghini Huracan EVO and Urus are much cheaper, with the Huracan being a V10 and the Urus a V8. These smaller power trains shouldn’t distract you, however, from their incredible sound and speed.

The Huracan, with a base price around $260,000, can reach a stock speed of 202 miles per hour, and the Urus, starting at about $200,000, reaches a speed of 190 miles per hour, not bad for a massive SUV.

The cheapest Ferrari, the Portofino, starts at $215,000 and has 4 seats, but the back 2 are so small it's basically just storage space. This ultimately results in both companies having an advantage in various different categories. While Ferrari generally has more reasonable prices, Lamborghini sells the cheapest, most practical car of them all.

Freedom Of Expression

Over time many people have done many things to their exotic cars. This varies from Red Bull’s drift Lamborghini Huracan to Deadmaus’s “Purrari,” both amazing builds, but only one lasted. Ferrari, the company that has been caught on video kicking Lamborghinis and Koenigseggs out of their headquarters, also sends out cease and desist letters.

One of their most well-known of these was when performer Deadmaus turned his Ferrari 458 into a Nyan Cat themed Ferrari, complete with a cat logo in place of the Ferrari horse. While most companies would be fine with this, Ferrari was insulted by it and demanded the car be put back to normal. Lamborghini, on the other hand, had no problem when Red Bull turned a Huracan into the ultimate drift Lamborghini.

So if you are intending to customize a supercar, it may be best to go with a Lamborghini.

When it comes to looks, you can go either way. Both companies make beautiful cars with incredible interiors. Different people will have different opinions on which is the better looking and sounding car. Through all of this, considering their pricing, design, statistics, and more, it is clear that both companies have been and still are better than the other in their own, unique ways.
