The first ever Ferrari F50 is officially up for sale.

A classic car of the mid-’90s is up for sale in California, and it’s not just any car: it’s the Ferrari F50, the car that… well, not many people really cared all that much about because the McLaren F1 was faster and the Lamborghini Diablo was just a little bit more insane.

But that doesn’t mean the F50 wasn’t a good car. Far from it--at the time, it was one of the best supercars ever made. Introduced in 1995, the F50 was a two-seat, two-door, no roof kinda car, and although it couldn’t outperform the F1 or grab the eye as much as the Diablo, it allowed its drivers to display wealth and opulence while also getting a suntan.

The F50 was powered by a 4.7-L naturally aspirated Tipo F130B V12 engine, itself an evolution of the 3.5 L V12 used in the 1990 Ferrari 641 Formula One car. Power was measured at 516 prancing ponies while torque was 347 lb-ft. Zero to sixty went by in a respectable 3.8 seconds, even by today’s standards, with top speed at 194 mph.

A six-speed manual transmission was nothing special, but the F50 was one of the earlier cars to adopt an electronically controlled damping suspension providing it with sublime handling.

Exactly 349 examples were built, with the last one rolling off the line in 1997. But the first one that came off the assembly line was unveiled at Geneva in ‘95. It was also used for practically every bit of marketing produced for the F50, meaning all press releases, posters, and marketing materials were of this particular car.

Long Beach-based Autosports Design Inc hasn’t listed a selling price, but we suspect it’s one of those “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” sort of scenarios. Previous examples have sold for well into the millions, so this one is likely to go for even more than that. Maybe $3 million?
