Italian car startup Kimera Automobili has unveiled the Rally Lancia 037 car, a modern reimagining of the Lancia 037 rally coupe from the first half of the 80s. The Lancia 037 was the first car specially designed for rally group B. The Lancia Martini factory team was driving this car in the World Rally Championship for five seasons, from 1982 to 1986. During this time, the Lancia 037 has brought the Italian team six WRC victories and one championship title.

This car was the last rear-wheel-drive car to be successful at the highest level in the World Rally Championship. And, perhaps, this is the most beautiful car of Group B - its design was developed in the Pininfarina studio.

Who Stands Behind Kimera Evo 37?

The car was first announced in April. Luca Betti, a businessman, rally driver, and sports manager, is behind the project to revive the legendary coupe. The Italian assembled a team of veteran designers who developed the original Lancia 037 in the early 80s. Sergio Limone was engaged in the chassis of the new car, Claudio Lombardi was preparing the engine, and engineer Vittorio Roberti was responsible for the construction of the first prototype.

Interestingly, the Kimera Evo37 is not just an external imitation of the legendary Lanci. The creators developed the original design of the 80s as if they were really designing a new evolution of Lancia. As a result, now it looks something like the never-existed Lancia 037 Evo 4.

The real Lancia 037 was built on the basis of the serial Lancia Beta Monte Carlo coupe. The central part of the body was borrowed from that car, and the original tubular subframes with double wishbones were welded front and rear to it. At the Chimera, the stretchers were developed and connected to each other, creating a full-fledged spatial frame. And the body itself was reduced to a minimum, retaining only a few welded elements from it: the floor, door openings, and the windshield frame.

The design of the Kimera Evo37 coupe has all the most known features of Lanci, including an angular front end with two pairs of round headlights and a hefty spoiler on the rear. But the shape of the body parts is different. In addition, the car uses deliberately modern LED optics.
