With electric cars increasing in popularity, there's no wonder there is a big debate about which is best. Electric cars are a new addition to the last decade, some impressive and some not so great.

The Fisker Karma is a luxury sports sedan produced during the early years of the electric car boom. It was one of the world's first luxury plug-in cars. After great success after its debut in 2008 at the North American International Auto Show, it was sold to the mass-market in 2012. Here is everything you will need and want to know about the Fisker Karma.

A Specification Overview

Henrik Fisker was producing automobiles way before he produced his own line of cars. He worked for the likes of BMW and Aston Martin during his career. Henrik even helped Elon Musk with his electric car ventures, which probably influenced many the reasoning behind making something unique and different for the EV industry.

With Henrik's extensive knowledge of the automotive industry and what it takes to make a car a global success, he introduced his car company, Fisker Automotive in 2007. In more recent years, the company changed its name to Fisker Inc 2016 to focus solely on electric-powered vehicles.

The Fisker Automotive name designed and produced the Fisker Karma in 2012. It is a luxury plug-in hybrid, which functions and drives like a sports sedan. Due to it being a hybrid vehicle, the Fisker Karma includes two modes. One mode using the engine, which is a 2-liter turbocharged Ecotec. The other mode uses two 120kW electric lithium-ion battery motors.

Its front-engine and electric motor can max out at 161 horsepower and offers a range of up to 230 miles. When the electric motor functions alone, it can offer only 32 miles. At the time, this was an impressive range, but it is not enough to rely on or be considered cost-effective in the current market.

A Look Into It's Interior

The Karma can fit four passengers due to the battery running down the center of the body. The large battery sits between the left and right seats, which means there is not enough space for a fifth passenger.

Aside from its small capacity, the interior boasts luxury and elegance. The Karma is fitted with brown suede seats, wood, and silver accents. It is minimal in design to add to the futuristic personality. Its speakers are fitted externally to enhance the minimal feel of the car when you are sat inside. The sound, dashboard, climate control, and other interior features are powered by the solar panels that sit on the top of the car.

Performance Details

The hybrid engine can offer top speeds of 125 mph. The two electric motors alone can boast 403 horsepower and reach 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. It is a powerful car in its design and performance yet did not meet its expectations.

It's short electric-powered range left the Fisker Karma fairly unnoticed and unreliable. Although the ideas were futuristic and new to the EV industry, the Karma did not meet range needs and affordability.

How Much Can You Buy One For?

Fisker Automotive had to halt the Karma cars' production in 2012 due to its battery supplier, A123 Systems, filing for bankruptcy. With no production abilities for 2012 and 2013 due to lack of supplies, Fisker Automotives suffered from bankruptcy in 2013. After furloughing many of its workers, they decided to discontinue the Karma and abandon other future ideas.

Hybrid Technology LLC bought the company for US$25 million. Hybrid Technology LCC worked closely with a Chinese company, Wanxiang Group, which redesigned the Karma and sold it under Karma Revero in late 2016. However, this new model is not one of Fisker's nor an original Karma itself. Sadly, the original Fisker Karma is no longer in production. But, they are still available to purchase from second-hand sellers and dealerships. Only a few thousand were produced, so it may be tricky getting your hands on one. The average price of a Fisker Karma in good condition is around $65,000. Prices may be slightly higher if you are looking for one in premium condition, or is one of the first to be produced.

In our opinion, although the Fisker Karma was a pretty cool and classic plug-in hybrid, it might be worth spending your money on something more reliable and modern. Fisker has gone on to producing all-electric vehicles, which may give you more for your money. Unless you have your heart set on the original Fisker Karma models, a newer electric-powered model can give you more power, range, and reliability. It was a great car during its time on the market, but the company sadly suffered at an unfortunate loss, and the Karma, along with Fisker Automotive, is no more.
