Drag racing is one of the purest forms of motorsport there is. It is just two cars, usually very fast, lining up together on the starting grid and putting their feet down, to see who gets to the end of the run the fastest. The great thing about it is you can have all sorts of vehicles compete in drag racing. Be they supercars, sports cars, or even SUVs. This video uploaded by Wheels on YouTube shows a Ford Explorer ST take on the might of the Dodge Durango Hellcat, and somehow come out on top not once, but twice!

No Obvious Modifications

The first thing to note in this video is that there don’t seem to be any obvious modifications made to the two cars. Both are of course already the high-performing versions of their respective models, but if anything has been undertaken to modify the two, then the video doesn’t reveal the details. That said, given the performance levels of both of these SUVs, it is debatable if you would even want to put some more performance into them. The drag races, however, do throw up interesting results.

You would probably expect that the Durango would beat the Explorer to the end of the quarter-mile run. Well, these two drag races throw up interesting results. At the start of the first race, the Explorer clearly gets the better launch and tops out at 121 mph at the end of the run with the Durango topping out at 117 mph. In terms of speed, the Explorer completes the run in 11.49 seconds and just edges out the Durango, which follows it home with a time of 11.74 seconds. A close run race.

Second Race, Same Result

The second race doesn’t go any better for the Durango. The two cars have now swapped lanes to keep things fair, but for whatever reason when the light goes green, the driver of the Durango launches way after the Ford gets going, and thus the race is effectively over before it began. The Explorer ST gets to the end of the run in 11.63 seconds and tops out at 119 mph, with the Durango following home with a 12.20 second run time and 115.29 mph on the clock. Whatever happened at the start of the run cost the Dodge dearly.
