Americans love their trucks - more than 3 out of every 4 new vehicles sold in America is now a truck or SUV; this explains why car companies are rushing to introduce new trucks and SUVs while simultaneously discontinuing car models.

Ford is a prime example of this: the Dearborn automaker exited the subcompact and midsize car segments a few years ago, while beginning production of the all-new EcoSport subcompact SUV and the all-new Maverick compact pickup truck.

Despite Ford's leadership position in truck sales, their SUV lineup is missing an extra-large passenger-carrying vehicle to compete with the Chevrolet Suburban.

The Ford Excursion was such a vehicle before it got axed after the 2005 model year.

With the popularity of SUVs continuing to grow right now, it would behoove Ford to create a new Excursion, this one could share the platform of Ford's super duty trucks and thus have the name, 'Ford F-350 Excursion FX4'.

Digital Instagram artist JLord8 has posted an image of what a Ford F-350 Excursion FX4 could look like on his page, and we take a closer look at what could be a bright idea.

The Classic Ford Excursion Got Based On An F-250 Truck

Ford began selling the original Excursion for the 2000 model year, and discontinued it in 2005. This SUV shared the F-250 platform and competed in the marketplace against the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL.

Rising gas prices eventually led to the demise of the Excursion. Although gas prices are rising once again, the demand for full-size trucks and SUVs does not seem to be letting up right now partly due to the fact that carmakers are now putting more fuel efficient powertrains in trucks and SUVs.

Strong sales of the Chevrolet Suburban should motivate Ford into bringing an all-new Excursion to the marketplace, and the F-series super duty trucks are the perfect platform to build an Excursion on.

JLord8's Instagram video begins with a Ford F-series pickup truck. It then adds rocker panels to the sides, and replaces the truck bed with a rear canopy. His final enhancements are a blacked-out front grill and black rims.

The feedback to JLord8's digital image of a Ford F-350 Excursion FX4 is all over the place. One commentor says this render basically just adds a canopy to a lowered F-350 truck. Another comment says it is a bad idea to lower a 4X4 vehicle.

There is one individual who wants Ford to put a V10 with turbos in a new Excursion, and another one who wants the Excursion as a 'dually'-type double-wheeled vehicle.
