Ford is bringing back the Mustang Cobra Jet for yet another special edition run, and this one will be the fastest Mustang ever produced.

Mustangs are a storied breed of car, with many special editions to mark it’s long and illustrious history. But no special edition is as illustrious for the Mustang as the Cobra Jet. Originally made in 1968, the Cobra Jet has been winning NHRA-certified drag races ever since.

Today, Ford continues that tradition with another drag monster.

The original Cobra Jet had a 7.0-L naturally aspirated V8 that was advertised to have 335 hp but would often clock in with closer to 400 stampeding ponies. Zero to sixty was done in 5.5 seconds on its way to a quarter-mile speed of around 120 mph.

Today, the new 2019 Mustang Cobra Jet does things a little differently. Under the hood is a 5.2-L Coyote V8 that has been bored out slightly from its original 5.0-L size. Also attached is a 3.0-L Whipple supercharger, which is bigger than the one they slap in the Dodge Challenger Demon.

Ford didn’t disclose a power rating in their press release. We can only assume because they don’t have a dyno that can count that many horses. We do know that the Cobra Jet will put up sub-9-second drag times and reach speeds of around 150 mph by the time it reaches the finish line.

The Mustang’s suspension gets a complete overhaul to turn it into a drag race monster. Power goes to a 9-inch solid rear axle attached to two-way coil-over shocks with adjustable ride height.

Low-drag disc brakes from Strange Engineering allow the Cobra Jet to stop without slowing it down during the race. Four-link rear suspension with anti-roll and panhard bars ensure stability, while an NHRA roll cage and FIA-certified seats ensure driver safety.

You can have the Cobra Jet in any color you want so long as it’s Race Red or Oxford White. The 50th Anniversary graphics are optional.

In Tribute to the 1968 debut, Ford will make 68 of the new 2019 Mustang Cobra Jets which will sell for $130,000 each. It’s an expensive toy, especially when you consider it won’t be street legal. But it’s a piece of history, and it’s also sure to leave any Dodge Demon it meets in the dust.
