Ford might have more Mustang-inspired vehicles on the way, according to a new interview.

The Ford Mach-E has arrived. With its Mustang-inspired styling, Ford’s first electric crossover is immediately recognizable. Those headlights? Definitely from a Mustang. Taillights too. The grille shares the same shape, but it's got a plastic cover instead of the usual holes for air.

Another aspect of the car that’s taken from the Mustang is the logo. Instead of the standard Blue Oval that adorns nearly every other Ford in the world, the Mach-E has the Mustang’s pony logo on the steering wheel, grille, and hatch.

Why is that? According to Murat Gueler, head of Ford Europe’s design division, that’s to play off the Mustang’s success.

“The Mach-E is our step into the future, without ignoring history,” Gueler told Autocar in an interview. “There’s a lot of emotion with the Mustang, and it’s time to progress that and make it spread wider.”

Gueler says that Ford did their research and found that customers didn’t mind the fact they had ditched the Blue Oval logo. The Mustang logo communicated the Mach-E’s “new-ness” and how "unique this car is.” Plus, there’s a lot of recognition in the Mustang - after all, it is the most popular sports car in the world for the fourth year running. For that reason, Gueler said that Ford has ”talked about building a family” of vehicles based on the Mustang.

Equipped with an extended range battery and rear-wheel drive, Mustang Mach-E has a targeted EPA-estimated 300 miles of range.

That said, they won’t all be Mustang clones in each segment. “We don’t want to take a Russian doll approach, where you can’t tell them apart other than the size of the car, but we want a family feel where a Ford EV starts to build off this concept,” he said. “But we’d never do a smaller version of this - if we did a smaller vehicle it would have different proportions.”

The Mach-E arrives later in 2020. Most Mustang-inspired news will surely follow.
