This poor Ford Mustang GT just can’t keep up with the Tesla Model 3 in this slightly illegal street race.
When will people learn? Electric cars are the new muscle car. In a straight line, short distance race, any electric car with even a hint of power will mop the floor with a traditional muscle car. Why? Two reasons: all-wheel-drive, and massive amounts of on-demand torque.
Here we have a 2015 Mustang GT against a Tesla Model 3. According to the video description, this is a teaser in advance of a more official race between the two cars, hence the whole racing in the middle of a public street thing. Even though the description says they only raced to 55 mph (which they said was the speed limit), most cities in the US have anti-street-racing laws, and even if yours doesn’t this kind of racing is super dangerous. Don’t try this at home.

But since they went ahead and recorded themselves doing it anyway, we’ll take a peek.
The Ford Mustang GT has a 5.0-L naturally aspirated V8 that puts down 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. However, it only puts that power to the rear wheels, so acceleration times compared to an AWD electric car aren’t going to be the greatest. Still, the Mustang GT advertises a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds, which is pretty fast.
We don’t know which Model 3 variant the GT faces off against, but given the way it just zooms off the line, we’re thinking it’s one of the AWD versions. If it’s the long-range, AWD version, this means 480 hp from an electric motor on each axle. Tesla says 0-60 is done in 4.5 seconds on this model, but judging from the video we think that might have been lowballed just a tad.
Of course, this could be the performance AWD version, in which case 0-60 is measured at 3.5 seconds. That sounds a little more in line with the video’s results.
Eventually, people will learn to stop drag racing electric cars. But until then, we’ll keep showing videos of muscle cars getting crushed.
