Before the release of the Ford Mustang Mach E, the Mustang name could never appear in the same sentence as the word ‘practical’, simply because the high-performance muscle Mustang provides pretty much everything except utility. However, the EV Mustang Mach E emerges as a crossover that offers a boatload of practical features to the point where it begins to seem like a priority.

With highly-competent rivals such as the Kia Niro EV, Volkswagen ID.4, Hyundai Iioniq 5, and Kia EV6, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach E manages to stand out by providing a sporty Mustang-derived experience while also being immensely efficient.

Starting at $45,000 for the entry-level Select trim, the 2022 Mustang Mach E isn’t cheap by any means, and its price escalates all the way to $66,000 for the range-topping GT Performance Edition. However, the Mach E feels like a premium EV crossover complete with plenty of power, enticing driving dynamics, and more importantly, tons of practicality.

Two battery packs are available on the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach E, and either one can send power to a singular motor on the rear axle for RWD, or two motors - one on each axle, for AWD. The entry-level battery, which is standard on the Select and Premium trims, comes in the form of a 70.0 kWh pack that provides an EPA-estimated range of 247 miles in RWD versions and 224 miles in models equipped with AWD. This battery pack produces a maximum output of 266 horsepower, along with 317 pound-feet of torque on RWD versions and 428 pound-feet on AWD versions. The former is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds, while the AWD Mach E with the standard battery pack can get the job done in just 5.2 seconds.

The more exclusive battery is a 91.0 kWh extended range pack that’s optional on the Premium trim, and standard on the California Route 1 and GT editions. It increases range to 306 miles on RWD versions and 290 miles on AWD variants. Powerwise, RWD extended range versions produce 290 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, while the upgraded AWD models get 346 horsepower along with 428 pound feet of torque. 0-60 mph runtimes come out to either 6.1 seconds or 4.8 seconds for RWD and AWD models respectively.

Lastly, there’s the best of the bunch. Range-topping GT and GT Performance Edition trims come standard with the extended-range battery as well as AWD, but they also receive a huge boost in power and performance. Both models produce 480 horsepower, and the GT makes 600 pound-feet of torque while the GT Performance Edition bumps up to 634 pound-feet. The 2022 Mustang Mach E GT can blast from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, and the GT Performance Edition does the run in just 3.5 seconds.

The Mach E is already well-placed among rivals simply due to its respectable power-to-range ratio, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. As promised, it's also more than complete in terms of practicality, making for one of the most versatile EV crossovers currently available. There’s ample passenger space both upfront and in the rear thanks to the Mach E’s under-floor battery location and well-constructed cabin.

Rear trunk volume amounts to a maximum of 35 cubic feet - which is above average for the class, and extends all the way to more than 60 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. It also comes with an adjustable load floor and storage underneath, and the rest of the cabin boasts spacious door pockets and storage cubbies, as well as a 4.7 cubic-foot frunk.

Ford offers an array of useful tech on the Mustang Mach E, though the amount and quality significantly differs based on the chosen trim. The Selected trim comes standard with a portrait-mounted 15.5-inch infotainment screen, a 10.2-inch digital driver’s display, and a wireless charging pad. Upgrading to the mid-range premium trim unlocks heated front row seats with driver memory settings, a heated steering wheel, and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. The top-spec GT models of the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach E don’t get a whole lot of extra tech, but they do receive plenty of aesthetic upgrades. Both boast front door scuff plates with the Mustang logo and GT lettering, as well as an aluminum-trimmed gauge cluster and front sports seats with faux-leather trimming.

Safety tech is similar and plentiful across the entire range, with notable features such as Ford’s Co-Pilot360 system, which includes an array of driving aids, cruise control, auto high beams, and even a 360-degree camera.

All in all, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach E continues to deliver as one of the most well-rounded EV crossovers in the entire segment. It provides enticing performance, useful tech, and above-average practicality.
