Ford Refreshes Mach 1 Trademark Signalling Possible Electric Mustang

Ford is still holding on to their Mach 1 trademark, so the Electric Mustang might still receive that moniker.

Ford has refreshed the Mach 1 trademark which might mean the all-electric Mustang will be given that name.

Let’s see if we can get the rundown of Ford’s electric plans out on the table. Beginning in January of last year, Ford started teasing an electric “Mustang-inspired” crossover. They called it the Mach 1 and then sat back to see what people thought of that plan.

And what they found out was people hated it. “Mach 1” was a name reserved for some of the highest-performance Mustangs ever built and not for a crossover vaguely reminiscent of a Mustang, and especially not an electric vehicle.

So Ford tabled that plan and instead swapped the name for “Mach E”, submitting a new trademark later that year.

However, we know that Ford is still working on an all-electric version of the real Mustang, and that might be called the Mach E too. Ford hasn’t provided us with any specific details so we have no idea.

But we have clues. Ford recently refreshed the trademark they originally submitted back in January of 2018 for the Mach 1 name. So Ford still seems to have plans for Mach 1, otherwise they wouldn’t spend the cash on keeping a trademark.

According to Muscle Cars & Trucks, the electric Mustang will likely sit on the same platform as the current 6th-gen Mustang. It’s expected to arrive by 2020, which will likely be near the end of that generation’s production cycle. It will also be part of Ford’s plans to electrify its lineup with 16 EVs and 24 hybrids by the year 2022.

This leaves the Mach E name for the electric crossover “inspired” by the Mustang. We know it will have a range of 370 miles, be “performance oriented,” and be built in Mexico. We also expect it to debut sometime before the end of this year. Beyond that, we haven’t got a lot of details besides the fact it will be electric and Mustangy.

We'd really just appreciate Ford clarifying the whole naming issue though.
