The 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 has yet to hit the road. But that won't stop its maker, Shelby American, from announcing a more hardcore version of Ford's pony car. Bound to be displayed at the 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 Dragon Snake can't be stopped, especially if it has more than 800 hp of power in tow.
Thanks to its 5.2-liter V8 supercharged engine that provides up to 760 hp of output and up to 625 lb.-ft. of torque, the 2020 Shelby GT500 is considered the most powerful Mustang so far – until the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 Dragon Snake arrives. Thanks to a Shelby Supercharger upgrade, the company was able to squeeze more power from the Dragon Snake version.
Now sitting on the bleeding edge of performance, the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 Dragon Snake is Shelby American’s attempt to further explore the pure acceleration capabilities of the 2020 Shelby GT500. Vince LaViolette, Vice President of Operations and Chief of R&D at Shelby American, disclosed that the company also collaborated with Ford Performance and other partners.
If you’re wondering how the SEMA-bound Mustang concept got its name, it was derived from “Dragonsnake,” an edition of the Shelby Cobra built for drag racing in the 1960s. Thus, the new Mustang bearing that name has been built with the same mission in mind.
To give birth to what Shelby American calls as the ultimate weapon of track destruction in the quarter mile, more power isn't enough. For better straight line acceleration, a new Shelby suspension system was installed and MagneRide was enabled. The Ford Shelby GT500 Dragon Snake also features new front and rear springs as well as front and rear sway bars.
Also installed on the Dragon Snake are performance half-shafts, new catalytic converters, new mufflers and exhaust tips and a full exhaust system. The pony car’s dual clutch transmission was also re-tuned.
Furthermore, the Ford Shelby GT500 Dragon Snake was made lighter by fitting a windshield and glass package, specialty equipment and performance-enhancing elements made from carbon fiber and aluminum.
For instance, the Dragon Snake is fitted with a carbon fiber hood and Shelby hood pins as well as drag-style carbon fiber spoiler. It rides on one-piece forged aluminum rims with performance rubber and comes with hardened and extended wheel studs. A wide body option is available for this version of the Mustang.
As if these aren’t enough to make the Dragon Snake look fast and furious at the drag strip, sporty stripes and Shelby and Dragon Snake badges are also added.
Inside, the Ford Shelby GT500 Dragon Snake boasts custom Shelby leather interior. Each Dragon Snake comes with a serialized CSM numbered engine plate and a serialized CSM numbered dash plaque. That's a glimpse of exclusivity for this Shelby GT500 quarter-mile monster!
