A new spy video has been found of the Ford Mustang GT500 driving on public roads with an understated rear wing.

In fact, we can hardly even call it a wing. It’s more like a lip spoiler or a gurney flap just hanging on the back of the trunk.

We have Chris Foucart on Facebook to thank for this latest video of a Mustang GT500 rumbling down the bright, summery streets of sunny Michigan. The shot is from behind, so we can clearly make out the entire rear fascia, which looks basically the same as a GT350. There’s also that itty-bitty lip spoiler in all-black.

If you look closely, it bears a striking resemblance to the same spoiler you get on a GT350.

This tiny rear wing is a direct contrast to the earlier teaser photos that Ford tossed out showing the GT500 with a far more substantial park bench on the back. If the GT350 trend holds, then we’re likely in for the same situation as their earlier top-end muscle car trim, which would be a regular GT500 and a more hardcore GT500R.

As with the GT350R, the GT500R would have a larger rear wing made out of carbon fiber, while the regular GT500 has a small, understated lip spoiler. The GT500R would also get carbon fiber wheels, a larger carbon fiber front spoiler, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

Of course, until we hear from Ford, that’s all conjecture. But it seems highly likely.

Also highly likely (mostly due to Ford’s own teaser statements) is a 5.2-L supercharged V8 with over 700 horsepower. The larger air intakes and vented hood for additional cooling basically confirm that the GT500 will be getting a power upgrade the likes of which a Mustang has never seen.

Connected will likely be the same 10-speed automatic that Ford loves so much, but strengthened to handle the additional power. There’s also a video from Motor1 that seems to indicate a dual-clutch option much also be available--quite possibly the same 7-speed dual-clutch transmission from the Ford GT supercar.

Ford said that the GT500 will arrive for 2019, but with the state of these test mules, we might get an official announcement before the year’s end.
