Frank Stephenson led the design for McLaren Automotive from 2008 onwards and had a hand in cars from the brand such as the MP4-12C and subsequent supercars. He loves to keep an eye on his old automotive family and watch them progress as they move forward into the future. He recently spent some time looking at the new Artura in a YouTube video on his channel and lent some especially interesting notes when talking about the mesh of the new Artura.
Mesh Is The Big Gripe Frank Has With The Artura
While talking about the rear-end of the Artura, Frank discusses his feelings on the rear-mesh. This is the section that surrounds the exhausts and where the McLaren and Artura badges at the back are mounted. Frank does not like mesh. Full-stop. He just asks why you even need mesh, as it is not a door to the car and it isn’t trying to keep anyone from getting inside the car. It just blocks hot air from escaping from the car.
Frank Offers An Interesting Solution For The Mesh
Now, you might be wondering what Frank would do instead of adding mesh to the back. Well, he answers that question and turns it into a prison cell. Not literally, of course. These would be vertical blades mounted in that rear area that would allow a great flow of air to come straight out of the back of the car, but it would protect anyone's hand from going into the back of the car. Frank clearly doesn’t understand why you’d do that, as he demonstrates by linking a clip into the video, where while talking about another car, he says “those are of the kind of people we have to eliminate from the gene pool.
Vertical Blocks Could Provide A More Elegant Solution
Those vertical blocks though would give you a beautiful and clear vision forward to the car into the engine way and really tidy up that rear end. This certainly sounds like a very interesting solution, and it would be interesting to see if anyone could come up with an Artura design with this type of rear-end. Watching the full video, Frank does overall love the design. But the mesh certainly seems to be the biggest gripe he has about McLaren’s all-new supercar.
