The Italian marque Alfa-Romeo has an incredible history in car manufacturing. But in three years' time, the brand will be getting an all-electric makeover.

Over the last few years, most car manufacturers have announced that they will be shifting their focus to electric vehicle production. This comes off the back of new European and Canadian proposals laying out banning the production of internal combustion engines.

Alfa Romeo has provided the world with some of the most beautiful and emotional cars of all time. Now, as they shift their focus to electric powertrains, let's take a look at what the future holds for one of the oldest car manufacturers in the world.

Stellantis Takes A New Path

Stellantis, the parent company to Alfa-Romeo, Maserati, and Fiat as well as 11 others, recently announced a plan to invest $35.5 Billion into the research and development of EV technologies.

The brand announced these new electrification plans in a recent conference titled: EV Day 2021, where it outlined the direction the recently founded merger between Fiat Chrysler and the PSA Group would be heading.

The announcement is based on an all-new electric vehicle platform with a claimed range of up to 500 miles. You can expect this to power vehicles under the Dodge, Chrysler brand, and Alfa-Romeo.

Carlos Tavares, Chief Executive Officer of Stellantis, had this to say on the topic:

“The customer is always at the heart of Stellantis and our commitment with this €30 Billion or more investment plan is to offer iconic vehicles that have the performance, capability, style, comfort and electric range that fit seamlessly into their daily lives. The strategy we laid out today focuses the right amount of investment on the right technology to reach the market at the right time, ensuring that Stellantis powers the freedom of movement in the most efficient, affordable and sustainable way.”

Alfa themselves have already started playing with hybrid and plug-in technologies after the unveiling of their Stelvio spin-off the Tonale. This project outlined that alfa will still be keeping its iconic look and receive some updated cabin technology, which was definitely needed to keep up with the competition.

One of the things that the conference entailed was a new set of electric vehicle themed corporate slogans for all the brands under the Stellantis umbrella, and for Alfa it was - “From 2024, Alfa Becomes Alfa e-Romeo”.

Stellantis is the fourth largest car manufacturing group in the world, and it's no surprise that they are making big moves when it comes to electrification. The merger between Fiat Chrysler with the PSA Group certainly helped pushed forward the plans of electrifying their offerings. however, they were still in need of a boost to get the ball rolling.

The slogans and investment is undoubtedly a good start. But it is for certain that they are years behind some rivals, especially if they plan for only 40% of their sales to be all-electric in the US by 2030.

The brand name of Alfa Romeo will not be changing. The output though will. They announced that they will release their first all-electric car in the next 3 years and plan to use the technology to move the brand forward to the next chapter of their long and rich history.

Alfa Romeo has in the past designed and manufactured some legendary sports cars, in recent years however they have been long overshadowed by their German counterparts. Reliability became a cursed stereotype and interior luxury is yet to match the likes of Audi and Mercedez. With this next generation of electrified Alfa's this could all change.

Alfa has already annouced electrification plans, but it's good to see that their parent company is putting some funding behind the project. This could mean a highly capable set of EV's that still produce the signature Alfa Romeo elegance and emotion we've grown to love whilst not contributing to the output CO2 emissions that governments are trying their hardest to fight.

They have had a late start when compared to competitors, but we have no doubts that Alfa Romeo will be able to translate their design language and character through their future EV lineup.
