George S. Patton Jr. isn't just an ordinary historical figure; he’s a legend. Having served in two World Wars, Patton is most known for playing a major role in World War II as a General in the United States military. Also quite as legendary is Patton’s much-trusted Dodge WC57 Command Car. It seems that this iconic vintage metal will be put up for sale by Worldwide Auctioneers in June.

Patton’s Personal Choice

Prior to World War II, Dodge had already transformed its TC civilian pickup into the VC-1 military truck, which in turn evolved into the WC Series. Underpinned by a three-quarter-ton, 4x4 chassis, the WC57 Command and Reconnaissance Weapons Carrier was served by Dodge's 230-ci inline-six T214 that delivered 92 hp of max output.

Patton was particularly fond of the WC Series, even though they were recognizable and priority targets for the enemy’s air units. While other generals were choosing Jeeps, Patton personally picked a Dodge WC57 Command car and had it modified to his spec in the United Kingdom in 1944. Armed with Browning .30 caliber machine gun, Patton’s WC57 features armor plating as well as high-volume horns and siren.

Pageantry For A Bold General

The general, also known as the “Bandito,” believed that he – as the commanding general of the Third Army -- should also be identified as such, so his WC57 Command car features two easily recognizable flags. On the driver’s side, the flag bears the insignia of 3rd Army, and on the passenger side, the banner features his rank. The red front and metal plates also bear his rank, usually in large silver stars.

Now, the Dodge WC57 Command set to be auctioned bears all such features, including several more details. Nonetheless, it isn't really certain if this WC57 Command was indeed Patton's personal car. While it came out straight from the National Military History Center in Auburn, Indiana, years ago, this WC57 had no paperwork that would prove that it was indeed Patton’s!

Authentic Or Not?

The iconic status of Patton’s Dodge W57 Command car has spawned several replicas. Sans the related paperwork, it’s hard to tell whether this car is the true thing or not. Nevertheless, if you’re confident enough of its authenticity, then Worldwide Auctioneers will wait for you from June 11 to 14 in Auburn, Indiana.
