With the inflated value of the used car market, finding a budget-friendly vehicle is quite a task. Not to mention when searching for a classic car project. With what seems like an all-time-low for project builds, the ethos of, built, not bought seems to be on the verge of extinction.

Yet, in a private garage in Indio, California, (known as the home of the Coachella music festival) sits a 1964 Morgan +4 project, yearning to return to its former glory.

Debuting in 1950, the +4 is a 2-door convertible sports car of epic proportions, mainly due to its simple construction, massive aftermarket parts supply, and cult-like following of dedicated enthusiasts. The “plus” in +4, refers to the significant power boost it received over its predecessor, the 4/4 model. With double the horsepower, it produced a very humble: 68 hp, as a result of the Standard Vanguard four-cylinder engine.

But it wasn’t until 1961 when the Morgan began to make leaps and bounds in the performance department, a result of Triumph’s improvement to the Vanguard engine. The +4 now produced 100 hp thanks to its 2,138cc engine, and could sprint from 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds. A lightning quick time in the early ‘60s.

Notable Morgan racer Chris Lawrence saw the potential of the +4, and collaborated with Morgan in 1961, to produce the +4 Super Sports. Its new lightweight aluminum-intensive body now sat on 72-spoke wire wheels and featured a Lawrence-tuned TR3 engine, complete with balanced crankshaft, flywheel, pistons, and connecting rods. The Super Sports was now capable of achieving 115 hp, and a blistering 0-60 mph of 7.6 seconds.

These integral changes led the Morgan to the pinnacle of all motorsport, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Lawrence and his +4 Super Sports took first place in the 2-liter class.

Which brings us back to the +4 here. What the ad lacks in description details, it more than makes up for in highly detailed photos. Telling us the entire story, that words couldn’t.

Appearing to be in the home stretch of completion, the Morgan sits primed and ready for paint and an interior overhaul. It appears that the seller is helping his late-uncle with the sale, where the description reads: “I am selling my uncle’s Morgan. He obtained this vehicle in 1991. It is well documented with many of the restoration parts purchased in the 90s from Morgan mfg.in England. The car was a frame off restoration featuring a complete fresh engine. Clutch. Transmission. Drive line and rear end. Built to super specs. Dual Mikuni's. Super hood scoop. Matching numbers car. Unfortunately, my uncle’s health failed before he finished the bodywork and interior.”

Like the majority of Morgans, it appeared to have had a loving owner, although he unfortunately couldn’t see the project through.

With a low-end retail value of $18,000 for what Hemmings describes as a “rolling wreck”, $20,000 for a numbers matching car, with a straight body and complete mechanics makes this Morgan +4 seem like a hell of a barn find.
