It seems that a couple of GM engineers got a little frisky behind the wheel of two 2020 Chevrolet Corvettes running roughshod through the streets of Bowling Green, Kentucky, the Home of the Corvette. Alexander Thim and Mark Derkatz were operating the Corvettes at an unsafe speed and in an unsafe manner - is there any other way to drive a Corvette? - before being pulled over by Kentucky State Police on Lovers Lane. Don't you just love it? They were cited for doing in excess of 67 mph in a 45 mph zone, the cars were impounded, and they were placed under arrest.

Busted!

I'm actually surprised this story didn't come out of Florida as most incidents with this patina usually emanate from there. At any rate, the details that were released so far courtesy of the Kentucky State Police, GM, and local news indicate that after the arrest of Thim and Derkatz, the cars were taken by flatbed and impounded by the Kentucky State Police. After contacting GM, who held the pink slips of course, they were fetched the following morning. As for the fate of the wayward GM engineers, no word was given. According to GM, they are "aware of [the] incident...and are currently investigating...[with] no further comment [released] at this time."

Given the cited speed of 67 mph it doesn't seem like they were going all that fast but it could have been some state imposed threshold. The all-new 2020 Corvette after all is powered by a 495 hp mid engined V-8 backed by a Tremec TR-9080 8-speed dual clutch transmission and capable of dashing to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. Were they just letting off a little steam after working long nights getting the Corvette ready, or was it just pure adrenaline? So far, Thim and Derkatz aren't talking.

I don't expect this to be the last incident involving a brand new Corvette, excessive speed and the cops, but only the first of many. Thankfully, no one was injured and the cars were returned unscathed. As for Thim and Derkatz we wish them the best in the fast food industry. Buckle up.
