General Motors plans to invest $175 million to develop a new generation of Cadillac sedans. This news comes after Ford announced in late April that they will kill off most of their cars except the Mustang.

According to MSN.com, the current market trend is to go for more SUVs as that is what is presently popular among consumers in North America. Cadillac plans on introducing a new model every six months between now and 2021. This will come at the cost of their current roster of sedans which are the ATS, CTS, and XTS— the first of which will be discontinued.

The funds will be allocated to the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant, located in Michigan. This factory already builds the Cadillac ATS and CTS along with the Chevrolet Camaro. All three cars share GMs Alpha Platform, which was first used in 2012.

Cadillac is projected to have three sedans that will follow a cohesive naming scheme with the new line of sedans. The CT4 will be the smallest, the CT5 at the mid-size and the CT6 will be the large sedan model. Two of the previously mentioned cars will be among the vehicles that the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant will produce along with five additional vehicles.

This move seems almost counterproductive to a previous statement that GM released in April this year which stated their intention to lower the number sedans by a significant amount.

What does this mean for the luxury brand long term? Who knows. The only takeaway is that company won't switch over to SUVs and crossover vehicles in the short term, though they may make that switch down the line. This does, however, give Cadillac the chance to carve out a niche in a market that will no longer be as over saturated as it presently is. This is certainly going to be a time of change in the North American motoring industry with Ford getting out of sedans entirely, Chrysler, whose future is still up in the air, and GM seemingly holding steady and contradicting previous statements.
