GM is recalling over 700,000 pickup trucks as some could catch fire if they were to get into an accident.

General Motors will recall close to 715,000 pickup trucks in North America, with roughly 640,000 in the USA and over 75,000 in Canada. At issue is a fire risk that can be sourced to faulty seat belt pre-tensioners that emit hot gases and ignite the truck’s interior carpeting.

Affected models include 2019 to 2020 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra in 1500, 2500, and 3500 HD models. An investigation was launched after a Silverado owner reported a fire broke out in his pickup after the seat belt pre-tensioners deployed following a crash in July. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the issue was replicated later in September when a similar fire started near the pickup’s B pillar.

The issue seems to be how hot gases from the pre-tensioners are not being properly vented away from flammable materials. When the pre-tensioners deploy, the gases should be directed up and away, but instead, are being vented downward. This causes the carpeting to ignite.

Pickup models with vinyl floor coverings are unaffected by this recall.

Corrections have already been taken at the factory, but quite a few models have already been sold that might be covered under this recall. Notices will be sent out to owners shortly to have their trucks brought in for repairs.

GM will fix the issue by installing a new bracket for the pre-tensioner that should direct gases away from the carpet material. GM expects only 1% of pickups covered under the recall to actually need the bracket, but better safe than on fire.

An earlier GM recall in November covered a similar number of pickup trucks and SUVs that were affected by a steering issue. Vehicles covered under that recall could lose steering control and seem to steer themselves due to a faulty wheel speed sensor. Those notifications should be in the mail now.
