In the last couple of years, we have witnessed manufacturers bring back some discontinued models, such as the Land Rover Defender, Ford Bronco, and the Electric VW microbus. General Motors are joining in the action of giving new life to dead icons with their all-new electric Hummer EV, which comes after they killed the fuel-guzzling Hummer back in 2010.

The future looks bright in the truck segment as it is witnessing a rapid shift towards an all-electric alternative. At least seven models have been announced and will soon flood the market. During the unveiling of the GMC Hummer EV, GM CEO Mary Barra made a welcome declaration that the company is on a path to an all-electric future.

8 Engine And Performance

The Hummer EV is an all-electric truck with a three-motor set-up that produces 1000hp. GMC quotes a drool-worthy 11,500 lb-ft of torque estimate, which we have to wait to see how they arrived at such a high figure. Whether it is accurate or just marketing gimmicks, the truck will have colossal pulling potential. All-wheel drive will come standard with GMC's electric Hummer.

According to GMC, the new Ultimate battery-pack technology in the Edition 1 electric Hummer EV is estimated to give at least 350 miles in driving range. The lower trim EV2x and EV3x will follow later on, offering about 250 miles per full charge.

7 Hummer EV Extreme Off-Road Beast

Both the GMC Hummer EV pickup and the GMC Hummer EV SUV will be built to conquer the toughest off-road obstacles. The vehicles feature standard independent front and rear suspensions consisting of short/long-arm geometry. This results in outstanding comfort and handling regardless of the condition of the path. To fine-tune traction, GMC added e-lockers on the front and virtual lockers at the rear.

The pickup and SUV electric Hummer EVs are optimized for approach, departure and break-over angles using heavy-duty ball-spline half-shafts that help reduce unwanted steering feedback during hard cornering and off-roading. Under the hood is a sequence of rigid steel plates that help protect the differential and battery pack in extreme off-road conditions.

6 Hummer EV Interior

The new electric Hummer crew cab pickup with a five-foot-long bed is a departure from previous Hummers that were essentially SUVs. It is a perfect marriage of innovation and convenience. The cabin is as spacious as the GMC Sierra crew cab pickup truck. A removable roof that is a subtle throwback to the famed T-top-like design in the GM cars of the 70s and 80s will expose the interior to natural elements. The roof comprises four transparent sky panels forming the GMC hyped Infinity Roof, which comes standard.

The interior finish comes in two attractive options; a lunar shadow in jet black and Taupe and a lunar horizon in jet black and light gray. Tech Bronze accents compliment both options.

5 Hummer EV Tech And Infotainment

A 12.3-inch color driver information instrument and a large 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display in the central console conveniently relays customizable data, settings and controls without taking the driver off their line of sight. A 14-speaker Bose audio system with an Electric Vehicle Sound Enhancement system helps create a premium multisensory experience audio experience in the Hummer EV cabin.

The electric Hummer will also ship with the Ultravision, which uses multiple cameras to render a digital overhead image of the Hummer EV's surrounding area. It comes with standard HD surround Vision and eighteen camera views on the pickup and seventeen on the SUV. Additional underbody forward and rear cameras provide a real-time view of the terrain for easy navigation.

4 Hummer EV Safety

The all-electric Hummer EV will ship with the latest version of GMC's Super Cruise system. While Tesla's semi-autonomous Autopilot remains the system to beat, the Super Cruise has proven quite capable. It comes with driver assistance technology for hands-free driving and automatic lane changing. Currently, the system is compatible with over 200k miles of road network, which is expected to grow over time.

We expect the electric Hummer to feature other mainstream safety offerings such as blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, and automated emergency braking. GMC claims that all Hummer EV vehicles will ship with a three-year subscription to the Super Cruise service.

3 Hummer EV CrabWalk Feature

The appropriately named features in the GMC Hummer EV help the truck move just like a crab. The feature allows all four wheels to turn in the same direction to a maximum 10-degree angle. Step on the throttle, and the electric Hummer will move diagonally. GMC claims that engaging the four-wheel steering feature helps slash the turning circle by about 7 feet, from 44.3 feet to 37.1 feet. That is Honda CR-V territory. The shorter wheelbase SUV is even more impressive with a 10 feet reduction.

Surprisingly, the feature is not a new feature from GMC since they have previously offered it in select Sierra, Yukon, and Silverado models. The feature will come standard in the Edition 1 trim but will likely be included in premium package options on the lower trims.

2 Hummer EV Watts To Freedom Mode

With 1000hp and equally impressive torque numbers, you can expect the Hummer EV to be blistering fast whenever you want it to be. GMC introduces a launch mode in the electric Hummer dubbed the Watts to Freedom or the WTF Mode. It will most likely elicit lots of reactions from drivers because it allows the bulky 9,000-pound Hummer EV to launch to 60mph in a mere 3 seconds.

The all-wheel-drive system plays a massive role in keeping the Hummer EV grounded, providing sufficient traction, and launching the truck forwards similar to the Tesla Model X.

1 Hummer EV Rivals

Like with all car segments, the Hummer EV will undoubtedly be pitted against other heavyweights in the electric-powered trucks and SUV market. Dominating the market won't be straightforward with America's bestselling vehicle, the Ford F-Series, going electric with the new 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning making a debut. Not forgetting that the electric Ford F-150 will come with affordable pricing and more traditional looks, and this will undoubtedly give Ford an upper hand in terms of selling volumes.

Other notable rivals include the hotly anticipated Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, and an electric Chevy Silverado EV truck that will use the GMC Hummer EV's electric powertrain. With an expected price north of $100,000, the electric Hummer will indeed have a lot of proving to do to stay ahead of the less pricey options.
