In a world of modified automobiles, there is a vast chasm between those who have dedicated countless hours into each phase of the build and those who tossed aside such grace to get to their personal finish line faster. Today we're looking at 5 sports cars from each side of the void.

Some of these builders painstakingly planned every detail, refraining from picking up a single spanner until they could visualize each inch of the completed project. Others seemed to drunkenly play spin the bottle with themselves throughout the construction. These are 5 of the most hideously modified sports cars ever produced alongside 5 palate-cleansing rolling works of art. Which is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!

10 Hideous: Ford Mustang

Via Car Tuning

I'm not certain what this Mustang did to deserve this sort of abuse but it seems that perhaps it was almost salvaged by bolting a supercharger to the V6 mill under the hood. Nevertheless, what the owner was thinking will forever be lost on the rest of us.

Originally listed for nearly $30,000, the car has seen numerous price drops to just $6,000 at the last known sale. What would you pay for this car?

9 Perfection: 1972 Skyline GT-R

It's not hard to improve on something that's already as great as the original GT-R. Still, the wheel arches, front splitter, and stunning period wheels with a little extra width add small subtle touches to make this Skyline stand out just a bit without going too far overboard. It's also lowered and uses black trim as opposed to silver trim.

When you own a special classic car, this is the way to improve them: with carefully curated details that add a little modernity and class.

8 Hideous: Mercedes CL500

If there was a prize for the best-looking of the worst-looking car here, this might win it. Based on a Mercedes-Benz CL500, this thing has gone from what was a super cruiser that could eat up large portions of interstate in serenity and speed to one that needs to avoid medium-sized pebbles.

Also, is it possible for a car to look cheaper in the front? This thing truthfully might have some polished sheet metal from Lowes bolted to the grille. You can't tell, can you?

7 Perfection: BMW Z4

The Z4 is an oft - unloved sports car and some of that is warranted. It's a bit slow in almost every form, it's not as light and nimble as its predecessor, and it's got a look that's highly polarizing. None of that stopped the magicians over at Manhart from dropping the S85 V10 from the E60 M5 under the hood of this Z4 after completely reworking the engine to mend the known issues and give it an additional 110 bhp.

That's right, this little two-door is sporting a 610 horsepower engine and transmitting it through a reliable 6-speed M3 gearbox.

6 Hideous: Jaguar XJS

Via The Gallery

If there's a car that looks like it might have actually been sold by a company, this one might be it. Based on the Jaguar XJS, this could've easily been a facelifted model that arrived before the XK8. However, that doesn't mean it looks good.

Jaguar has recently branded itself as the car for the bad guy and this couldn't be any more opposite. It's such a dopey happy face on the front of us that you'd have to be a very specific type of person to drive this thing anywhere.

5 Perfection: Toyota 86

The Toyota 86 is a wonderful little car. It's fun, it's sporty, and it's very capable of providing the driver with a memorable experience. This one, however, is a bit more extreme. It features a full-blooded Ferrari V8 mounted in the front that powers just the back tires.

As demonstrated above, this proves to overpower those tires easily. Of all the modified 86s and BRZs on the planet, it's tough to imagine that there's a more monstrous one than this.

4 Hideous: Pontiac Fiero

Via autosspeed.com

Would you believe that this car got a spot at a Concourse competition? It's true too. That alone makes it legendary, but what makes it even more special is just how botched the car looks overall.

Clearly far from the Ferrari that inspired it, the Fiero is just the wrong size for such a long low - slung supercar. Nevertheless, many will think of this example when remembering what a botched replica looks like.

3 Perfection: Ford Mustang

Via Formacar

How many car guys do you know that are only car guys? Isn't it true that a vast majority of stereotypical muscle car people are single-minded? This build is especially interesting because not only is the build meticulous, but it also features a totally separate hobby: cycling.

Also, for everyone talking about how they've ruined their line of sight, let's just remember two things. One, that we can see the driver headrest from this position and two, almost every full-sized truck on sale today is a rolling blind spot that most drivers aren't qualified to pilot so this guy gets a pass full stop.

2 Hideous: Plymouth Belvedere

The Belvedere is a sincerely classic car that deserved a far better fate than this. I'm pretty sure those are Nissan taillights and that a child with a crayon could've used the money that went into the car far more efficiently.

Also, what's wrong with just maintaining a classic car like this? Why do some people need to ruin them?

1 Perfection: Hyundai Veloster

Via Engine Swap Depot

Maybe we should've started here but nothing can cleanse your palate better than this little demon puppy full of fire behind those big dopey eyes. The Veloster N is perhaps the best front-wheel-drive car ever made for enthusiasts.

Via Engine Swap Depot

If you're like me though, there's a bevy of cars like the Veloster that you wish they could've made with rear-wheel-drive. Someone else is like us because this Veloster is rear-wheel-drive and it's powered by a properly big-turboed 2JZ.
