Harley-Davidson created the LiveWire in an unexpected move that incorporates an electric powertrain. The H-D Revelation permanent-magnet electric motor is capable of 105 horsepower and 86 ft-lb of torque. Demand for electric motorcycles is still on the rise and Harley-Davidson seeks to create a viable option in the market.

The LiveWire has a significant range of 146 miles without slacking on performance. This year, racer Angelle Sampey set a record for the highest speed on a production electric bike with the Harley. She was able to complete the quarter-mile in 11.54 seconds, even with a speed limiter set at 110mph.

Many unique features adorn the bike, such as a Rechargeable Energy Storage System for the cells packed into a 15.5kWh battery.

Here, we will explore the details of LiveWire, its performance, and value as an electric motorcycle.

Development And Features

Harley-Davidson gave consumers a chance to test ride the bike and provide valuable feedback to shape development. They conducted an international tour in which feedback was gathered from around 15,000 consumers. “We offer a no excuses riding experience in everything we do and we are led by what our customers tell us matters most”, said H-D Chief Marketing Officer Mark-Hans Richer. This attention to detail could give the company a unique advantage in a market increasingly saturated with electric choices.

For the LiveWire project, Harley-Davidson wanted to create a bike with high-performance handling, instant torque, and significant range. Since the company has only created gas-powered bikes over its 117-year history, this was a significant undertaking. “It’s an expression of individuality and iconic style that just happens to be electric. Project LiveWire is a bold statement for us as a company and a brand”, said Hans Richer.

In addition to the performance specifications detailed below, the LiveWire incorporates an array of rider assistance features. This includes features such as anti-lock brakes and traction control enhanced for cornering (C-ABS, C-TCS) and a Drag-Torque Slip Control System (DSCS).

These features, part of the Reflex Defensive Rider System (RDRS) can be adjusted to the rider’s preference via seven unique Ride Modes. In addition to the preset modes, custom modes can be created allowing the user to modify throttle response, traction control, power, and regeneration.

Cycle World’s Don Canet tested the LiveWire along with its various modes. “Even with a custom ride mode set to maximum power, throttle response, and regeneration, I was hard-pressed to get the bike out of shape on corner entry or exit riding at a fairly quick street pace”, he said; “The taut ride felt communicative and planted when whistling along winding roads outside the city limits”. Other first-time rides have provoked a similar response, substantiating the LiveWire’s smooth and consistent power delivery.

Performance And Electric Range

A high-voltage 15.5kWh battery containing lithium-ion cells supplies the LiveWire with power. Heat is diffused around the battery using aerodynamic vents and a cast aluminum housing. The housing is a major structural element of the bike and features fins that allow it to work as a heatsink. The permanent-magnet electric motor, called “Revelation”, is cooled via water jackets.

H-D Revelation has a rated output of 105 horsepower and 86 lb-ft of torque. In the rear, adjustable SHOWA BFRC mono-shock suspension gives a cushioned ride. This is complemented by SHOWA SFF-BP shocks in the front. Stopping power is provided by Brembo Monoblock calipers with 300mm rotors. The spoked wheels are wrapped with sporty H-D/Michelin Scorcher tires giving the LiveWire extra agility.

According to Harley-Davidson, the city range for the LiveWire is 146 miles or 95 miles combined.  Rather than using a method such as regenerative braking, the LiveWire recuperates power when the throttle is not engaged.  Regeneration can be tuned via four Ride Modes.

The LiveWire has DC fast charging capabilities that can produce a full charge in just 60 minutes. Charging can also be achieved through 120/240V outlets, which results in a slower charge time of nearly 8 hours for 100 miles of range. The Rechargeable Energy Storage System has a 5-year unlimited warranty.

Cost Efficiency And Value

The MSRP for the LiveWire starts at $29,799. Since this is an EV, consumers may receive a tax refund along with additional benefits depending on the state of residence. Amidst analyses of the LiveWire, some have considered its price to be exorbitant. It costs $10,000 more than the Zero SR/S, an electric sportbike that offers a 161-mile range (city), and a 200-mile range with upgrades.

Harley-Davidson motorcycles typically fall in a higher price range due to their prestige in the market and reputation for high quality.  The bike is fully electric, which eliminates refueling costs in the long term. For consumers looking for a dependable bike with the prestige of a Harley, the LiveWire is a well-rounded choice.
