Few things go together as well as classic muscle cars and big V8 engines. Everyone has a favorite that resonates strongly with them. However, most muscle car fans associate their favorite car with the specific engine that it came with, the Ford Mustang with the 289 V8 or 428 Cobra Jet V8, Chevrolet Camaro and the 396 V8 and the Dodge Charger R/T with the 426 Hemi.

In this new video from performance parts manufacturer Holley, we see a mash-up of classic muscle car components. A 1965 Ford Mustang fitted with a twin-turbocharged 354ci Hemi from MOPAR. Purists might decry this pairing, but this classic belongs not on the show circuit but the drag strip, and in the name of quick quarter-mile times, speed outweighs authenticity.

A Mustang Body On Top, All Business Underneath

The body of this drag strip demon is a 1965 Ford Mustang fastback. It sits on a custom-built, tube frame chassis that's certified to run 6-second quarter mile times. The panels are carbon fiber to save weight and a lot of care went into making the car look as clean and simple on the outside as possible.

The “tubbed” rear-end with massive drag slicks give the car a very aggressive stance. The aluminum drag wing on the trunk with a pair of drag parachutes hint at the type of performance this car can muster.

On the inside it is all business. A full drag racing roll cage with a racing seat keep the driver locked into place while the steering wheel and shifter are full race to get the job done on the strip. Gauges and a digital readout keep tabs on the performance of the beast that lives under the hood.

Underneath the super-clean exterior of this Mustang lies a bit of a surprise. A fully built twin-turbocharged 354 cubic inch Hemi V8 from Mopar. Car owner Rob Matheis says the engine is currently pushing 1100 to 1200 hp on pump gas but can produce upwards of 1400 hp on E85. That’s nothing to snicker at and is plenty of motivation to get this Mustang down the 1320 extremely quickly.

The turbocharger setup is custom built with the intake manifolds made from older Hooker brand side pipes. The 354 V8 has tunable Holley fuel injection and it's paired to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, also known as the TH400. Power from the mill runs to a custom Ford 9-inch rear end where it meets those massive drags slicks.

This drag beast may not be a hit with purists, but we have no doubt that the racers and enthusiasts out there will appreciate this car's build quality and speed.
