When you think of sports, performance, and muscle cars, the Chevrolet Vega certainly doesn't come to mind. Chevrolet produced the subcompact from 1970 to 1977 in several different variants including a two door hatch, notchback, wagon, and sedan delivery. With only an anemic 4 cylinder available it certainly wasn't a drag strip monster. But it was initially lauded in the press, before it developed a habit for breaking down and shoddy build quality.

Well, this latest Blown 1974 Chevy Vega "Hot Wheels" car might force you to reorient your thinking of the much derided 70's Chevy econobox. With its light weight, 600+ hp under the hood, an aggressive exterior look, and a bargain basement sale price, the car might just be the deal of the decade. Let's check it out.

This '74 Vega starts with a slick PPG Dark and Dramatic Plum Purple finish with custom pinstriping and "Hot Wheels" graphics going down the sides. There's a fiberglass hood with Dzus turnlock fasteners which gives the car a mean front look. The frame has square tubing on the back half with a fully tubbed rear, 8 point roll cage, Custom Ernie McDaniels front suspension, Custom ladder bars, diagonal links, and adjustable coil over shocks and springs in the rear. It also has quick ratio manual steering with a new Flaming River box.

Blown 400 Stroker

Considering the Vega only weighs about 2,300 lbs, the addition of a blown 400 stroker is sure to motivate the car down the track. And this build is stuffed with go fast parts. The engine block is from Dart and fitted with steel caps, a Lunati Racer crank, Lunati Pro-Billet steel rods, and Ross custom pistons. It also has a Custom Comp hydraulic roller camshaft, Dart iron Eagle race heads, and an MSD Pro Billet distributor.

But the star of the show is the blower. Sitting atop that Chevy 400 small block is a giant Weiand 6-71 Supercharger with dual 650 cfm Barry Grants with a BDS chrome fuel line kit. Backing it up is a TH400 with reverse manual valve body and a B&M pro ratchet shifter. With 7 lbs. of boost she's good for 625 horses on pump gas! Very nice!

The inside of the car is simple and clean and all business. It's finished in "Black with Purple tweed door panels. The Pro high back race seats are comfortable and utilize a 6 point RJS harness for both passenger and driver.
