Hennessey Performance has been hard at work on the Ram TRX since receiving an early example of the new pickup truck king of the hill. In the beginning of March, Hennessey posted a video on YouTube showing the new Hellcat Hemi-powered pickup drag racing a C8 Chevrolet Corvette, a competition that seemed anything but fair given the mid-engined supercar's significant weight and aerodynamic advantages. Then mere days ago, the Texas-based tuners showed the TRX hitting the dyno after receiving the Mammoth 900 upgrade package, where it laid down a 728 horsepower in a screaming pull. But stats on paper only go so far and now, Hennessey returns with a (sort of) controlled experiment pitting the Mammoth 900 against a factory stock Ram TRX for some drag racing fun.

Horsepower On Paper Versus Real-World Performance

On paper, the Mammoth 900's advantages seem clear—and the result of this competition can easily be considered a foregone conclusion (after all, Hennessey wouldn't publish a video showing the upgraded version actually losing a drag race). But the question is more along the lines of exactly how much the package improves upon the Ram TRX's already impressive factory ratings of 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque during hard launches off the line.

Hennessey boasts that the Mammoth 900 package ups power output to 912 horses and 873 lb-ft of torque—and backs up the figures with the dyno testing that showed peaks of 728 hp and 679 lb-ft. But those figures were at the rear wheels only, so output could theoretically be lower when factoring in driveline losses to all four wheels. Plus, the Mammoth 900 package being tested here includes 20-inch wheels shod in 37-inch tires, which are both heavier and reduce torque efficiency, as well.

The Race Isn't Even Close

Despite the physical disadvantages of the package, it appears Hennessey's combo of a ported supercharger snout, upgraded fuel injectors, and revised pulleys certainly does the trick. Watch the video to see just how far the Mammoth 900 walks away from a stock truck that has itself relegated the Ford F-150 Raptor to second-class status.
