The Hennessey V8 VelociRaptor is a beast of a truck that can absolutely demolish the regular Ford Raptor in a drag race, as their latest video shows.
Most people really love the second generation Ford Raptor. Even though it doesn’t have a screaming V8 engine anymore, the 3.5-L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 has won people over to the side of an efficient and raucous V6. Four hundred and fifty horsepower will do that to you.
But some people are pickup purists. They say that a V8 is the only engine that can go under the hood of an F-150, and anything less is simply uncivilized. And Hennessey Performance, V8 lovers that they are, agreed wholeheartedly.
So they took the Ford Raptor, tossed out its 3.5-L twin-turbo V6, and gave it a 5.0-L V8 as a consolation prize. Then they added a 2.9-L supercharger (operating at 7 psi boost), a new wiring harness and ECU, and a whole bunch of other upgrades to various components so that the final product made over 750 hp.
It’s more than a little bit nuts. But it’s also more than a match for the regular Ford Raptor.
To show us just how much faster the VelociRaptor is than the Raptor, Hennessey lined a stock Raptor against their big V8 upgrade. We should note that the Raptor is in crew cab guise while the VelociRaptor is an extended cab (and thus lighter), but that probably won’t play too much in the coming drag race.
As you can see, the VelociRaptor leaps off the line and quickly pulls ahead of the Raptor even though he let the stock Ford get the jump. Then the VelociRaptor simply walks away. By the time the quarter-mile is over, the VelociRaptor had a nearly 2-second lead and many car lengths between them.
Hennessy advertises the VelociRaptor as possessing a 4.1-second zero to sixty time and is capable of finishing the quarter-mile in 12.2 seconds. After this video, we believe them.
