GMC has garnered a name for big brawny trucks in the American auto industry. The truck division of General Motors has built quite a reputation with underrated offerings like the Sierra. But they also have a section consisting of some pretty good SUVs that can very well go against big shots from Ford and Chevy. GMC Acadia is the smallest of the SUV lot and Yukon is the big daddy of the set.

In between, lies the GMC Terrain, which is technically the Chevy Equinox underneath. This capable SUV is getting a fair share of updates for 2022 and it includes the much highlighted rugged off-road inclined AT4 trim (already offered for the Yukon), which is more than just an aesthetic job. The plush Denali and sinister Elevation trims are retained, and GMC adds upgraded exterior cues and technology features across the 2022 Terrain.

The updated GMC Terrain continues to lock horns with the segment-leading likes of Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 (including the impressive new RAV4 Prime), along with the humbler likes of Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, and of course, its twin - Chevrolet Equinox which gets a plethora of updates for 2022.

The 2022 GMC Terrain brings in the all-new off-road-ready AT4 trim, along with a slew of other aesthetic and visual updates.

Aesthetics has been given due importance in the 2022 GMC Terrain. The front fascia is more rugged with a redesigned grille. Lighting has been refreshed all around with LEDs and a tweaked design. The play of colors continues as the 2022 Terrain comes with four new color options. New 18 and 19-inch wheel designs help amplify its visual appeal. The all-new AT4 trim (finally making its way to the Terrain) also gets a set of brawny visual tweaks, and also capable off-roading elements like steel skid plates.

The interior also gets updated with new trimming and fabric options. A new 8-inch instrument cluster is added to the Denali trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Wireless Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa capability are all standard across the line-up. Above all, the GMC Pro Safety suite is standard, which includes a few impressive assist features.

Pricing and trim levels have gone for a reduction run here. The 2022 GMC Terrain will be offered in four vibrant trims, including the all-new AT4 trim. While the pricing is yet to be disclosed, dealer guides from CarsDirect indicate SLE, SLT, and Denali to be slashed notably. The base trim of 2021MY - SL has been discontinued.

As for the new AT4 trim, pricing is expected to start from $36,000. The sinister-looking Terrain Elevation Edition has also been carried forward and can be had with the SLE and SLT trims. It adds 19-inch gloss black aluminum wheels, a blacked-out exterior, and exclusive exterior color options.

GMC has discontinued its optional 2.0-liter inline-4 motor for 2022, and it now packs a sole 1.5-liter turbo inline-4 that pumps out 170 HP and 203 lb-ft of torque. It is paired to a 9-Speed Automatic transmission, which sends power to either the front or all wheels. The performance graph is linear on this one and provides for a cozy driving experience. The soft suspension setup does make things cozy on the highways, but it steals from its athletism when it comes to winding roads. There are no major additions for 2022, however.

The 2022 Terrain continues to pack a spacious cabin. It gets new upholstery and trimming options to refresh things up. But the fit and finish remain questionable with cheap plastic bits. Practicality has been given due importance here and the second-row seat can be folded flat in a 60/40 fashion. If you are more into the luxury side of things, then the Denali might tickle your senses. It gets treated with upscale upholstery which is of lighter shades to give it a plush touch.

But it is in terms of technology that the 2022 Terrain gets most of the updates on the inside. The infotainment system in the base SLE trim is a 7-inch unit, whereas the higher ones get a bigger 8-inch unit. The user interface is a breeze to use and you are also treated to an integrated navigation system in the Denali as standard (most probably in AT4 as well), and optional on SLE and SLT. The optional technology package has been revamped for the SLT and AT4 trims. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. And a new 8-inch TFT instrument cluster comes standard in Denali.
