We can be sure of the SUV-crave getting serious when Toyota decides to launch a crossover with 'Corolla' in its name. The Toyota Corolla is one of the most trusted and popular cars of all time. In both its sedan and hatchback form, the Corolla has helped built Toyota as a brand in many countries.

A fine fusion of flexible performance, impressive MPG figures, practicality, and a particular knack for reliability, helped pave the podium for Corolla's success. The Japanese automaker plans to rekindle the same flame once again among crossovers with the all-new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross. Yes, it's a crossover that plans to shake things up in the sub-compact SUV segment.

Toyota has shaped it to easily slide in between the RAV4 and C-HR. And it is not just a rushed-up job of slapping on a tall body to the sedan or hatchback grade chassis. The 2022 Corolla Cross is a legit ground-up job and it is quite the wholesome package, as you would expect from a Toyota. The latest boy in town will lock horns with the likes of 2021 Ford EcoSport, 2021 Nissan Kicks, and 2021 Hyundai Venue - the cheapest Crossover in America.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is the latest entrance in the sub-compact crossover bunch and is expected to start with an MSRP of $25,000.

Toyota has confirmed the fact that the 2022 Corolla Cross will be offered in 3 trims - L, LE, and XLE. While the pricing is kept under curtains, we expect the 2022 Corolla Cross to start with an MSRP of $25,000 for the base L trim and top out at $30,000 for the XLE trim. Toyota has always been aggressive when it comes to pricing, and so we can expect a well-stacked package for each of the trims.

While the international model gets a hybrid version with 2-electric motors, we would be getting the non-hybrid version with a 2.0-liter inline-4 motor. The 169 hp engine is coupled to a CVT and sends power to the front wheels as standard. Toyota will offer AWD as an option but don't expect anything 'wow' from this setup and is strictly focused on a no-frills urban commute, primarily. That being said, we know that Toyota loves hybrids, and the automaker has confirmed on bringing the more fuel-efficient hybrid option in 2023. With this humble setup, the 2022 Corolla Cross can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Fuel efficiency has always been a forte for Toyota and the 2022 Corolla Cross plans to live up to name. While the EPA ratings are still pending, Toyota claims that the all-new Corolla Cross returns a combined 32 MPG in the FWD layout and 30 MPG in the AWD layout. The Corolla Cross happens to the only other option in the segment to flaunt AWD layout, with the other being Ford EcoSport.

But Ford lacks notably when it comes to EPA ratings, with a combined 28 MPG for FWD and a mere 25 MPG for AWD. Hyundai Venue returns a combined 31 MPG and Nissan Kicks comes out as the top with a combined 33 MPG. But being FWD only gives Hyundai and Nissan an edge over the others.

Practicality is the core value when it comes to the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross's interior. It will be quite spacious from a sub-compact crossover angle, and will easily surpass the likes of the Toyota C-HR in terms of seating and cargo space. While it does share the 'Corolla' nameplate, Toyota has built an all-new chassis that doesn't bear any resemblance with the sedan or hatch. The top trims will be wrapped with Softex upholstery - a neat type of faux leather. It will come packed with a power driver seat, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and a sunroof. But all of them would be optional.

The dashboard flaunts a very clean and 'cool' look with floating infotainment and a bright TFT display for the instrument cluster. The thin aluminum rails bring about a soothing contrast to the all-black layout. Toyota will also offer the Corolla Cross in a beige-black combo to make things airy.  As for infotainment, you would get either a 7-inch or 8-inch floating layout, much like all the other cars in its portfolio. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard, and it will also pack SiriusXM satellite radio. Optional features include wireless smartphone charging, rear-seat USB ports, and a pumped-up JBL audio system.

2022 Corolla Cross sure looks distinctive but it does have a few shared cues with its stablemates. The rear has a RAV4-angle to it, and so does the side profile. Toyota has given the Corolla Cross a beefed-up look, with its muscular shoulder lines, and fender claddings. The TNGA-C platform it is built on is modular and has emphasized rigidity and driving dynamics as well. LED lighting all around, and blacked-out elements, give it a subtle contrast. The stance is well accounted for and is complemented by 18-inch alloy wheels on the XLE trim. However, the base L trim gets 17-inch steel rims.
