With a pedigree backed by impressive engineering, the Toyota Supra is a car that needs no introduction. Far from an ordinary sports car, the Supra quickly became a sensation in the automotive space thanks to Toyota’s precision engineering and the famous 2JZ-GTE.

It wasn’t until the fourth-generation that the Supra reached peak popularity. Enthusiasts unanimously consider the Mark IV Supra to be nothing short of JDM royalty.

While prior iterations carried a Celica prefix, it didn’t take long for the Supra to distance itself from its front-wheel-driven brethren. However, Toyota decided to pull the Supra out of the American market in 1998, citing poor sales.

For the 2020 model year, the Supra nameplate was brought back to the US after a multi-decade hiatus. Demand was obviously high, and early cars were fetching solid premiums.

It’s been two years, and Toyota has confirmed a manual GR Supra for 2023. Let’s see if the news of a manual version has brought down prices of Mark Vs in the pre-owned market, especially the 2020 model year.

Consulting a few used listings, we can see that prices of the 2020 Toyota Supra are between $49,000 and $61,000 at the time of this writing. Per Kelly Blue Book, the average listing price of a 2020 Supra is $56,661, and consider $55,136 to be the fair purchase price. According to them, the GR Supra’s market range falls between $52,692 and $59,482. Plus, the 3.0-liter fetches more than the inline-four model. For reference, the 2022 Supra range starts from $43,540 for the base 2.0, while the mid-tier 3.0 and 3.0 Premium are priced at $51,890 and $55,040, respectively

But as mentioned above, customers are listing 2020 Supras for over $60,000. Look at Autotrader, and there are 2020 Supras listed for more than $70,000, while the cheapest offering is available for $48,900. Of course, the range is an approximation, and the actual value of the car is determined based on mileage, engine option, number of owners, service records, and vehicle condition. Also, demand is another factor worth considering. Since the GR Supra is quite popular among enthusiasts, most, if not all, sellers will try and cash in on that.

The Mark V Supra uses a BMW-sourced 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. It also gets a new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of twist. On the 2022 models, the inline-six puts out 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque, while the 2020 version is down 50 horsepower and three lb-ft. Is the difference in output a deal-breaker? No, not really.

GR Supras come with an 8-speed ZF automatic with rear-wheel drive as the standard configuration, regardless of the displacement. Performance-wise, the Supra in its six-cylinder-guise gets to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds (4.1 secs in the 2020 model), while the 2.0-liter takes 5 seconds to reach the ton.

As for the driving experience, it’s the perfect daily driver. The Mark V Supra makes for a brilliant example as the ride is compliant to the extent that many wouldn’t complain about its comfort. Some might even question it being a slightly sporty Golf GTI. Well, that’s true, and in its softest setting, the Supra is as good, if not better than any hot hatch, and is more than a worthy companion for your weekend shopping.

In many ways, the Supra seems more German than Japanese. Its BMW roots are pretty evident the moment you start having fun. The GR Supra isn't as analog as the Mark IV. However, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division was keen on tweaking the dynamics and helped make the Supra a characterful little sports coupe.

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. The expression befits the Supra quite well, as some might find the exterior design unimpressive. However, with enough zest and character, the design team has done their part to differentiate the new Supra from its corporate cousin, the BMW Z4. The muscular haunches give the Supra a unique distinction, while the integrated ducktail spoiler does add a bit of drama.

The tech-filled interiors look modern but remain fairly subdued when put against the Z4. It’s not as eye-catching as its Bavarian counterpart but does feel unique in its own way. Moreover, there are handy storage spaces on offer alongside several convenience features. These include Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Parking Sensors with Emergency Braking Function, 12-speaker JBL Audio System, and Wireless Apple CarPlay. However, some of these features are limited to the 2022 model year.
