When the first generation of Jeep Wrangler YJ models hit the floor in 1986, the general consensus was that these new vehicles were an upgrade from the previous model, the CJ-7. During their production run, the YJ was featured in films such as Jurassic Park, gaining much popularity. The YJ was discontinued by 1995, replaced by the TJ, and later on by the 4xe, so it's been 26 years since it was last in production. After more than a quarter-century in use since it was last manufactured, Jeep Wrangler YJ models have a tendency to retain the majority of their value.

However, price depends on the condition of the body, and with the YJ, it also depends on the condition of the engine, as well as what level of trim a certain vehicle is. Trim levels became very popular with the Wrangler YJ, and would therefore have an effect on their current value.

Read on to find out just how much a Jeep Wrangler YJ has retained its value by 2021.

Prices Are Steadily Increasing

As the years go by, the trend is for the Wrangler YJ's value to increase, not decrease. As of 2021, a Jeep Wrangler YJ in perfect condition - a term known as “Concours”- would be valued at around $21,200. These vehicles have no dirt or dust, no paint chipping, no damage to the body, no materials too loose or too right, and all chrome-looking as reflective as a mirror. The next lower tier of quality, “excellent,” would see value at $13,400. At this level, the vehicle may have minor damage, paint chipping, dirt, dust, wear, and tear, but nothing too noticeable. From there, the next level down is “good,” at which point the value drops to $9,100. Finally, the lowest tier, “fair,” is where potential buyers will see the most severe price drop, as the value is cut approximately 60 percent to $3,800. However, these prices are just the average value; dealers and private sellers have some flexibility in selling prices at each tier. That said, based on a few dozen Wrangler YJ models for sale, the value has been steadily increasing since their production ceased in 1995.

High Median Value

It's notable that this particular subset of Wrangler has a high median value. The Wrangler YJ has a median value of $8,100. The preceding model, the CJ-7, had a median value of $9,900, but the YJ is still climbing up the list. The lower sales prices can also have an effect on raising values; lower sales will draw in more customers, raise demand, and therefore make the YJ models more valuable, according to Hagerty.

Also notable is that many Wrangler YJ models that have been sold lately are being bought by younger drivers who actively use the vehicles, as opposed to older collectors who are more likely to keep them for show. This supports the trend that future collectors will see fewer models available in the future, which will allow the value to increase further.

All About Trim Level And Engine

The two aspects that have the most impact on determining value are engine and trim level. These tend to be the most significant factors controlling price, as there were different styles of trim offered for the YJ throughout its run. Of the trim levels, while all are close in prices, Renegades will be the most expensive, with the Sahara taking second place. After that, the Islander trim level is third, followed by the base model YJ. The price difference between the base level and Islander is about 11 percent and then a few hundred dollars is the difference between Islander and Renegade.

The engine is also powerful, as the 1987 Wrangler YJ featured a powerful 4.2-L, six-cylinder engine putting out 117 HP, although no Wrangler YJ ever featured a V8 engine. Further, in 1991, Wrangler YJ models received an upgraded engine: a 4.0-L inline-six that could put out 180 HP, which is much more powerful and desirable than the engines of earlier models. The difference between 1987-1990 models and 1991-1995 models varies a few hundred models as a result of the variation between the two kinds of engines.

Solid Resale Value

For multiple reasons, the Wrangler YJ tends to hold a firm resale value. The box-like, distinguished look is more timeless than most vehicles, practically to the point where it's iconic. Even when Jeep updates the Wrangler, there are core features to the design that remain stable in one form or another. It also maintains a balanced focus between on-roading and off-roading.

While the focus had shifted to on-roading with the Wrangler YJ, the off-road capabilities were also improved, despite not being as prominent a feature. The YJ was also known for performing well in inclement weather while also having strong air conditioning for the heat of the summer. The Wrangler YJ is also ideal for drivers who seek more space and versatility than a car would offer, yet don't have the need for a vehicle as big as a truck.
