There are plenty of differences between the 1986 version of Top Gun, and its 36-year-second-coming Top Gun: Maverick. There’s the age difference, in the actors and the storylines, in the advanced tech, and obviously, in the hero cars.

In the first movie, Kelly McGillis’s character, “Charlie,” drove a 1958 Porsche 356, or rather a replica of the real thing, built over a VW Beetle chassis. At the time, Canadian replica maker Intermeccanica built it for the movie.

That said, the hero car of Top Gun: Maverick, needed no replica. This 1973 Porsche 911 S is a numbers-matching original, loaned to the production house by San Diego resident Nick Psyllos. Psyllos is not just a Porsche owner, he’s a serious Porsche collector and owns or has owned more than 10 Porsches, including a 1972 911 ST tribute car in tangerine orange.

Jennifer Connelly drove it for real in the movie, and Psyllos not only made some sweet money off the Porsche but now, he has a bonafide Top Gun Porsche to make even more money off, later. This brings us to the all-important question. How much is a Porsche 911 S classic from the ‘70s, or ‘60s? Let’s find out.

One Of The Coolest Sports Car Classics

The 1973 Porsche 911 S coupe used in Top Gun: Maverick is one of the best sports cars from Porsches from that era, especially because from 1974 onwards, Porsche dumped that sleek, long bumper in favor of American safety versions. This pre-impact bumper is still highly Vaunted today, as is anything with lesser safety but more style. That said; the safety bumpier looked chunkier and made the Porche look just a bit forced.

At the time, the HiPo 1973 Porsche 911 S came bearing a 2.4-liter, 190-horsepower engine. All this power came mated to a new “Type 915” transmission taken off Porsche race cars for a simpler, quicker shifting, which made it faster. It rode on Fuchs wheels with the iconic six-spoke design and also had a new front chin spoiler with reduced front-end lift. It was so effective, that it went into all the 911 cars, across the board.

With all this, the 1973 Porsche 911 S did not come cheap, retailing for over $10,000 stock. If you added more options, you paid more as well.

The Porsche 911 S, and not just from 1973 but even in the years before it, sells for a decent amount and according to Hagerty, prices are up 9% from the past year. A Concours edition 911 S is worth around $286,000 today, says Hagerty. Earlier this year, another silver metallic Porsche 911 S was sold on Bring A Trailer for $214,412.

This love for classic Porsches has sprung up overnight because, for the longest, these cars usually used to go at the same price they retailed for in their heydays. Now, the so-called daily drivers of then have become classic collector items of today, retailing for easy six figures. And if there is a celebrity connection, the price can jump nearly sevenfold. So if you have a Porsche 911 S, especially from 1973, and in silver, we suggest you hold on to it and let it go only when you get your desired price. If you are in the market, buy one now, before the price goes up faster than the Darkstar.

Most “celebrity cars” do not automatically start costing the sun and the moon, unless the celebrity is long dead and gone, a la Elvis Presley or Marilyn Monroe. That said; if the car comes in a hit movie or TV series, the value goes multi-fold, even for a Porsche.

The 1970 Porsche 911 S that Steve McQueen drove in Le Mans sold for a whopping $1.375 million at an RM Sotheby’s auction in 2011. This is nearly 23 times what a similar Porsche would cost. While a Maverick Porsche does not resonate the same as a Le Mans’ Porsche, given the fact that the latter was driven by the hero in pivotal moments of the movie, it could still mean a nice bump in the price.

Typical movie cars, especially hit movie cars sell for about seven times their price, which means the Jennifer Connelly-driven 1973 Porsche 911 S could easily top a million, and more. And since Connelly’s character, Penny, loves to sail fast boats, it’s not surprising to see her whip around in a fast car, right?

This is not the first time a Porsche has features in a Tom Cruise hit. To give you an idea of how much a Tom Cruise-driven Porsche goes for, the 1979 Porsche 929 from Risky Business sold for $1.9 million on Barrett-Jackson last year. So there could be big numbers in store for the 1973 Porsche 911 S and Nick Psyllos.
