A sports car can be a very nice looking piece of kit. And when you’re driving around in it, with your arm hanging out the window its nice to have something on your wrist that goes with it. Maybe something sporty that matches the coolness of your ride and perhaps looks good for every occasion. And with Christmas just around the corner, a smart-looking wrist-watch accessory could be just the thing.

Car lovers definitely have a soft spot for watches. And car magazines are bursting full of ads for them. In fact, there are more watch advertisements in many of the popular motoring magazines than there are feature stories. So what is it about these wrist adornments that seem to set pulses rising amongst the car enthusiasts community? Well, it could be that we appreciate the cool design and appearance of a wristwatch, similar to the way we admire a sporty ride that’s just been to the detailers.

Or it could be our fascination with mechanical things, our love affair with precision engineering, which, much like our affection for the inner workings under a car hood, is what gets us fired up about them. Or is it simply our own vanity, possibly it's our desire to try and look as sporty as the car that we’re sitting in. Maybe it’s more of a fan-base thing, where we feel the need to wear something that matches a popular carmaker’s brand or badge, like a Ferrari T-shirt, or a Harley-Davidson leather jacket, or a Formula 1 baseball cap.

Our guess is, it could be any of these. Who knows what really drives us to consume. But one thing that we do know is that carmakers and watchmakers love to collaborate on these gadgets and bring us some really cool stuff that we can spend our money on. So, without further ado, here’s a selection of the coolest car-themed wristwatches we could find.

Watches that should suit pretty much any budget, which we think would look great in any sports car.

Scuderia Ferrari Watch

This is the cheapest watch in our line up. If you're a Ferrari fan and you prefer a watch that comes with an old-school stainless steel band, then you might like this one. It has the famous yellow Ferrari horse badge emblazoned on the face at twelve o’clock, and it also has the words ‘Scuderia Ferrari’ in-scripted in red on the dial face.

The black dial, combined with the red and white hands looks pretty cool, giving the whole thing a classically, sporty appearance. The minute display near the center, which looks like a rev counter, is also a nice touch. This Ferrari-inspired wrist-watch comes at a very accessible price too, at around $200.

Casio Race Lap Chronograph

Casio Race Lap
Via: Casio

Quite some time ago Casio teamed up with Red Bull Racing to produce their Edifice range. It’s a collection that obviously has an F1 theme, and they come in loads of different shapes, sizes, colors and prices.

This one is from the Race Lap Chronograph selection, which, according to Casio, has been designed and produced under the supervision of the racing team. The cool thing about this watch is that you can link it to an App on your smartphone, and you can use it to measure lap times. So if track days are your thing, this one might be of interest.

The bold black face, blue outer dial, and touches of blue around it, really mix well with the silver band. And if you travel a lot, there’s no need to reset the time as you cross timezones, this one is automatic, and it's priced at around $400.

Tissot Alpine On board Auto Chronograph

Tissot Alpine
Via: Tissot

Tissot tell us that this is “Every Alpine driver’s essential item”. This one has an anti-reflective case that’s made from sapphire crystal. So if it does happen to fall off of your wrist when you’re negotiating those Alpine hills, hopefully, it won’t get scratched too badly when you retrieve it from the road.

Anything from this Swiss watchmaker is built to last, and this timepiece is not only sturdy, its also self-winding. Knowing Tissot, it won’t miss a beat either. The perforated black strap with blue stitching gives it a real sporty feel, even if the face itself is quite plain and looks a bit bulky. So, this piece of precision engineering is likely to cost you around $2,250.

Breitling Endurance Pro (Orange)

Breitling Pro

This vibrant piece of kit is a really sporty statement. Breitling tells us that “It’s designed to be both a lightweight watch for athletes and a casual, everyday sports chronograph”. And they refer to it as the ultimate 'athleisure' watch (isn’t it great when a luxury watchmaker makes up a new word for the English dictionary).

So if you have a likening to bright sports cars, and you want something that you can show off in your local gym as you hit the weights machines, this may be of interest. It's very light; the case material is three times lighter than titanium and six times lighter than stainless steel. The black and orange design is awesome, and with a timing mechanism that’s one hundred percent Swiss-made, it's an absolute belter. Priced at around $3,400.

Porsche Design 1919 ChronoTimer Flyback

Porsche 1919

This sleek black and silver chronograph from Porsche is a work of art. It has really cool, modern, clean lines. And the face design, like some of the others in the line up, is not overly done. So if you’re taking your sports car to the office, and you’re looking for something a bit more special, this one may interest you.

It carries a scratch-resistant sapphire glass case, and the leather strap is, like all new Porsches, absolutely superb quality. This, more formal, Swiss-mechanised wrist-watch is the Christmas gift that most men would cry for, and you can probably get one for your wrist for around $6,800.

Rolex Daytona (White Gold) with Meteorite Dial

Rolex Daytona

The famous Daytona range has been around since the '60s. And versions of this wrist-watch were given away as prizes to the first-place winners of the Le Mans 24 hour races. Paul Newman was a big fan of these expensive bracelets, he famously sold one-off for a cool $18 million.

This one is 18-carat white gold. It has perpetual motion and comes with a rubber and metal Oysterflex bracelet. The modern black and silver styling of this Rolex, coupled with its large black outer dial could easily make this one a winner either on the road or in a nightclub. You may have to wait in a queue for it though, priced at around $34,000, these cool pieces of racing heritage are extremely popular.

Roger Dubois Excalibur Spider Huracan STO Carbon

Roger Dubois

This one’s for Lamborghini lovers. And it really is a car-inspired piece of precision design. This beautiful watch is a tribute to the Lamborghini Huracan Spider, and Lambroghini’s Squadra Corse team was heavily involved in its design. It has a carbon fiber case and a black titanium bezel. Its structure is designed to look like a super-car engine complete with strut bars. And the rotor has been designed to look like the outer edge of a Huracan’s rims.

The interchangeable strap is perforated calfskin, and if you’re not too keen on a blue band, you can swap it for black or orange. So if Lambo’s are really your thing, you can pick one of these up for a cool $60,000.

Richard Mille RM 50-03 McLaren F1

Richard Mille
Via: Richard Mille

This is the last wrist-watch in our lineup, and it’s by far the most expensive. Designed by Richard Mille and the McLaren Honda F1 team, this ultra-lightweight instrument weighs only 38 grams. Not content with just using carbon and titanium, they’ve actually created their own bespoke nano-material, called Graphene, for this other-worldly looking piece. And McLaren is so happy with the new material; they plan to use it in their race cars in the future. Because it’s six times lighter, and two hundred times stronger, than steel.

The crown of this watch sits over a partially exposed movement, and it's designed to look like the wheel rims used by the British racing team. At the sides, they’ve also attempted to recreate the air ducts of a McLaren F1 car. The whole surface looks like a mini engine block. When this timepiece hit the streets in 2017, it was being sold for a jaw-dropping $980,000. But for that money, you do get a 1:5 scale model of the McLaren-Honda racing car, which was driven by double world champion Fernando Alonso, thrown in (smile).
