In the modern era, supercars need to do more than ever to rise above the competition. They need to be fast, comfortable, beautiful, and, above all else, wonderful to drive. While a number of supercars from the last year were able to check those boxes, none were able to match the bar set by the Mclaren 720S.

Boasting performance, unmatched beauty, and an unparalleled driving experience, the 720S has been one of the most unanimously well-received next-generation supercars to date.

What’s most impressive about this car is that since its release in 2018, it has remained virtually unchanged in the years since it’s release.

For Mclaren, it’s a straight dash to the finish while everyone else battles for second place in the supercar market.

Engine And Performance

When reviews of a car list that it’s ‘hard to exploit on public roads’ as one of the few negatives, you know you’re looking at an insanely powerful car. The 720S is one such case, delivering 710 horsepower from a twin-turbo 4 liter V8. However, the Mclaren is competing in an era where Ferrari’s boast comparable horsepower and muscle cars can come out of the factory with nearly 800 horsepower under the hood. As a result, it’s increasingly important that supercars not only have abundant power but that they know how to use it. In the case of the 710S, a great deal of its success comes from a design that allows drivers to utilize all the power more frequently.

The overhauled suspension as well as the aerodynamic improvements are what allow the Mclaren to fly past its rivals from Ferrari and Lamborghini. In terms of the aerodynamic capabilities of the 710S, the cold air intakes have been replaced by air channels inside the doors, allowing the engine to stay cool while generating downforce. The Mclaren also has an intelligent rear wing that rises under braking and disappears into the body when the car is driving in a straight line. The result is a system that simulates a fighter jet style airbrake and the drag reduction systems of Formula 1. The active suspension can be adjusted by cycling through the car’s three driving modes (comfort, race, and track), and has been made lighter over the years by improving the toe angle of the wheels to improve stability and weight. The passenger cell has also been overhauled from previous Mclarens, making them both more rigid and lighter. All that combines to create a chassis that generates an abundance of downforce and only weighs 3,167 pounds.

The engine and the intelligent design features combine the in 720S to create a serious potent racing machine. The 720S runs 0-60 in 2.7 seconds, and 0-100 in 5.3. Although it's a force to be reckoned with on the drag strip, the 720S is, first and foremost, a weapon on track. The lightweight design and intelligently implemented features all the car to hug the corners of any track at high speed and attack straights with confidence that can't be beaten. Mclaren seems to understand this and has given the 720S a track timer option that allows you to relive your best on-track moments. Mclaren also understands that you won't always be on the track, and has created a car that can win races but provides dazzling fun on public roads.

Interior

When discussing any supercar, the interior isn’t usually the high point. Regarding the 720S, the interior is pretty much exactly as comfortable as you would expect. The two bucket seats do their job well enough, and while the interior isn’t as opulent as in a Ferrari, it looks clean enough to be aesthetically pleasing. There isn’t much room for anything other than a driver and a passenger, but there is a small storage compartment in the front.

In terms of the dashboard, the instruments are modern looking and change based on which driving mode is selected. One of the coolest things the 720S does is flip the dashboard on its side in track mode, providing a slimmed-down display of the RPMs, gear, and overall speed. For entertainment, there’s a 7-inch touchscreen that allows access to the basic things you would expect in a car such as stereo and navigation. However, there are also some unique things like the ‘drift control’ setting that allows the driver to electronically control the angle of the car while drifting. It’s not the selling point of the 720S, but it is one of those little details that make it one of the most fun supercars on the market today.

Price

There’s a reason that we don’t all drive around in Mclarens and Ferraris, and that reason is that they are really expensive. Starting at just over $300,000 US dollars, the Mclaren is outside the price range of nearly everyone. But with supercars regularly being sold with multimillion price tags, it's really not even close to the most expensive supercar money can buy.

In terms of price, the 720S's main competitors, the Aston Martin Superleggera and the Ferrari 488 are both offered for roughly the same price. However, the 720S performs much better than its rivals, making it a clear choice for anyone shopping in this price range.

In fact, the 720S performs so well that there have been reports that the 720S is capable of performing similarly to a Mclaren P1, which costs over a million dollars.
