What cars are good for drag racing? Certainly, not just any car is built to tackle tar and cars on the horizontal track.

But for electric vehicles, the challenge is a matter of when not if. One in three of the fastest automobiles in the world are either hybrids or all-electric vehicles.

And if you consider the two quickest 0-60 mph time, they’re also hybrids or all-electric vehicles. It's no surprise because EVs like Tesla is faster than petrol cars when it comes to accelerating even over a quarter-mile distance.

There’s no guessing which company manufactures five out of the thirty fastest cars to clock 60 mph. Tesla.

And the Tesla Roadster may well be one of the best EVs to grace the drag racing track.

Here we highlight what makes the Tesla Roadster the best for drag racing.

Dragsters have to be fast over a measured distance of 402 meters (¼ mile) or a lesser distance of 305 meters. Two cars race at a time, and the first to cross the finish line at the end of a straight course from a standing start wins.

Not all cars get eligibility to compete at organized Drag racing events. Most of the drag races held in North America are overseen by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA).

The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) oversees drag racing events on a broader scale than the NHRA. Dragsters are unique vehicles built solely for drag racing, and they are broadly categorized into three types based on fuel.

There are nitromethane, gasoline, and methanol fuel types. Most dragsters are single-engine vehicles.

In addition to being single-engine fast cars, drag racing cars can be supercharged or turbocharged, making them faster and powerful. Nowadays, like the Tesla Roadster, they can be electric vehicles too.

Top fuel is one of the fastest drag race categories. Cars in this category can go from 0 to 100 miles per hour in one second or less.

Such speed leaves the driver facing five times gravity’s force. In the quarter-mile range for drag racing, the Top Fuel category cars manage to complete it in less than five seconds.

The Tesla Roadster is expected to make its entrance in 2022, and much is expected from this luxury sports car. It promises a blistering and super fast speed with 1.9 seconds done in 0 to 60 mph.

This figure makes it the fastest production car in the world. Of the top five cars to go the fastest over a ¼ mile distance, only two aren’t EVs.

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and Dodge Challenger SRT Demon are both the fastest petrol cars over ¼ mile. Mclaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder, and Faraday FF91 are all hybrids and electric videos.

The Dodge Demon could go 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 2.1 seconds on a drag race track. But the Tesla Roadster at a time of 8.8 seconds in a quarter-mile could cross the finish line before the Dodge Demon.

Bugatti Veyron and Dodge Challenger SRT post a quarter-mile finish of 9.7 and 9.5 seconds. These are the two top figures for any petrol car, but the Tesla Roadster beats this by at least 0.7 seconds.

Drag racing cars in the Top Fuel category are also known for the narrow and long wheelbase. The Tesla Roadster comes as a sports car with a 92.6 inches (2,352 mm) wheelbase.

Top fuel uses cars rear-engines, unlike EVs like Tesla Roadster that uses motors connected by its battery pack. Rear-engines help the top fuel cars to gain traction, stability and keep the drivers safer.

When the Tesla Roadster arrives, it promises blistering speed and tracks tearing acceleration for an electric vehicle. Although its fellow Tesla sibling, the Model S P100D already has a reputation against fast cars with a 2.2 second over 0 to 60 mph.

Automobili Pininfarina Battista from Italian car makers is the ultimate hypercar, with less than 200 to be sold at a cost below $2.5 million.

This electric vehicle promises a top speed of 250 mph and can go from 0 to 62 in less than 2 seconds. The Dodge Demon will no doubt be one of its top petrol car rivalries.

This speedster takes the crown for non-electric vehicles over 0 to 100 mph distance in only 5.1 seconds. One car we may expect to challenge the Tesla Roadster is the Ariel HiPerCar.

This supercar boasts of doing 100 mph in 3.8 seconds and 0 to 60 mph in 1.9. Street legal Japanese hypercar, Aspark Owl, is another fast accelerating car that will give the Tesla Roadster trouble.

In fact, the car has gone from 0 to 60 mph from a standstill in only 1.9. Whatever the competition, it won’t change the fact that the Roadster may well become the best EV for drag racing surpassing its sibling, the Model S.
