Famed for its contribution to the automotive culture, BMW was always ahead in terms of performance and innovation. However, in the light of recent events, BMW has become a mass-market churner and has sort of lost the plot, case in point, the BMW 4-series.

The 4-series was a market-driven idea from BMW when the community never really needed one since the 3-series coupe did its part pretty well. The 4-series wasn’t revolutionary but, the G22 generation garnered a lot more attention than the F32 it replaced. Who doesn’t remember the spy shots that shook the community when it showed the upcoming 4-series/ 3-series sporting a massive grille. Although to be fair, the grille is not that bad and will eventually grow on people.

Since the automotive community has so much variety to offer these days, folks at BMW decided to give the 4-series an extra set of doors. Here’s what we expect from the upcoming 2022 BMW 4-series Gran Coupe.

Expect Engines From The Existing lineup

Not a lot is available regarding the engine specs, however, judging by how BMWs of the past have been revealed we expect the upcoming Grand Coupe to feature the existing lineup of engines. From reports, the 4-series fastback is expected to come in two variants, initially at least; 430i and M440i. Later on, there is the possibility of an M4 Gran Coupe but from past experiences, BMW has refrained from offering an M-powered 4-series fastback. Then again, as market demands change so do previous trends.

Much like the existing 4-series, the 430i Gran Coupe should feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four putting out 255 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the more powerful M440i should feature BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six pushing 382 horsepower and 364 lb-ft of torque.

If BMW’s M-division takes a serious look at the Gran Coupe, there’s a good chance the S58 could end up inside the hood. Internally called the S58, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six gets two states of tune in the M4; 473 horsepower in the M and 503 horsepower in the M competition. Torque should stand at a healthy 443 lb-ft with BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system completing the drivetrain layout.

A 4-series With Four Doors

If you’ve had a good look at the 4-series, there’s every possibility that you won’t mistake the Gran Coupe. It’s essentially a 4-series with extra doors at the back. Why the extra doors? What’s the point of the M3 then? Well, the M3 is a traditional three-box design whereas the 4-series Gran Coupe is a fastback, the Coupe features a hatch instead of a trunk.

Since information is scarce and with spy shots not giving off anything significant, we won’t expect much to change. However, there is the possibility of a slightly revised front and rear fascia as BMW has covered the entire car with camo. Usually, carmakers tend to exclude bits that they tend to keep as part of the existing design, which is not the case here. Additionally, since the Gran Coupe is a whole new body style, BMW could give it a refreshed exterior design. That said, this is based solely on guestimates and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Expect More Practicality

Via: Carscoops

With the 4-series being a strict 2-door coupe, practicality does take a hit. However, the 3-series should easily fill in the gap but BMW went on to bring a 4-series fastback anyway. With that being said, expanding the product line is one of the most intriguing facets currently being employed in the industry. It should be noted that the 3-series does not get a fastback design and it’s important that BMW fill that gap.

With the 4-series BMW can fix that and increase the scope of a more stylish 4-door coupe. Although, we don’t expect an entirely redesigned interior. If anything, it should exactly mirror the existing 4-series cockpit with the addition of slightly spacious rear seats, just like the 2-series and its Gran Coupe equivalent. Expect a plethora of convenience features like three-zone climate control, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and an automated parking system to be part of the equipment list.

Pricing And Release Date

It’s really early to speculate on when the 4-series Gran Coupe is revealed. With the market not responding to the 4-series as intended coupled with the pandemic, the reveals can be pushed to late 2021 or possibly 2022. Given the uncertainty, it’s safe to say that whenever the covers do get pulled, the 4-series will be a stunner, regardless of how hideous it may seem. Looks are subjective and so far, it’s not as bad as you might think. In terms of price, the Gran Coupe is around $2,000 more than its coupe counterpart. We expect the 2022 BMW 4-series Gran Coupe to be priced around $47,000 give or take.
