It's been 12 years since Harley-Davidson closed the curtains on Buell owing to the financial crunch of 2008. This Michigan-based motorcycle manufacturer once carried a lot of zeal to take it up to the established likes of Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Ducati when it came to performance motorcycling. Well, we can feel that spirit being revived by the recent acquisition of Buell by EBR (Erik Buell Racing) which ironically is the direct descendant of the once-promising brand.

EBR is also Eric Buell's brain-child and was started in 2010. But mind you, Erik Buell is in no way connected with this reincarnation and he has decided to dedicate all of him for FUELL, his new all-electric motorcycle brand. The trademark and Buell brand name has been acquired and EBR's CEO Bill Melvin is the one handling things now. He is moving on quite aggressively with the plan of launching 10 vibrant motorcycles by 2024.

Most of the offerings by Buell Motorcycles will be rebranded EBR motorcycles, but that suffices well for an automaker that was dead till now! The first four offerings in the pipeline are quite diverse in themselves but share one common factor - the engine. All four will be based on the already existing 1190 platform from EBR.

Buell Motorcycles have broadened its spectrum and will produce supersport, touring, dual-sport, and dirt offerings ahead; the first wave of which is powered by a common 1190 platform.

2021 Buell Hammerhead 1190RX - The Supersport

The first of the lot is the anticipated Buell Hammerhead 1190RX which is powered by an 1190 cc. 72-degree V-Twin motor that is derived from the Rotax-developed DOHC engine that was originally used in 2007 Buell 1125R. But there is considerable improvement mechanically and the new iteration of this 1190 motor pumps out 185 hp @ 10,600 rpm and 101.6 lb-ft @ 8,200 rpm. it clearly is a screamer and the engine is coupled to the rear wheel via a 6-speed manual gearbox.

It uses an all-aluminum frame with a cleverly integrated fuel reservoir to save space and weight. In this system, the frame rails convert into the fuel tank! The swingarm is also of stiffened aluminum which helps bring the curb weight of the motorcycle to just 419 pounds without fuel. That paves for some impressive power-to-weight figures. Another unique feature of Buell motorcycles is its perimeter front rotor which is a disc pad that runs along the perimeter of the front rim.

Suspension duties are taken care of by Showa with inverted big piston front forks and a single shock at the rear without linkage.  The Hammerhead is designed in collaboration with Ryan Hahn - a famed name in the Buell family and the 1190RX will be offered in Heritage colors or carbon fiber.

The next motorcycle in line is the 1190SX which shares almost all the cues with its fully-faired brother. It differs in terms of ergonomics and of course, design language. This sinister-looking streetfighter gets an upright sitting position and is lighter than the 1190RX at 414 pounds.

This is also inherited from EBR but has been notably updated for 2021. The new 1190SX gets full carbon fiber bodywork and improved dynamics with the help of a high-rise handlebar, lower pegs, and comfortably damped seats. It will be offered in either Carbon fiber finish or black mamba showcased above. Another notable addition is add-on sport-touring accessories which will be an extensional feature of the upcoming touring motorcycle from Buell.

2021 Buell 1190HCR - The Dirt-Bike With A 185 hp Heart

This is by far the baddest dirt bike we have come across. For starters, it uses the same pumped-up Rotax-derived engine from the 1190RX and 1190SX and pumps out the same 185 hp and 101.6 lb-ft. These are insane numbers for a dirt bike that weighs in at just 355 pounds. This will be a dedicated Hillclimb race bike that will be derived from the 2020 AMA National Pro Hillclimb title holder which was ridden by Logan Cipala.

The key cues of this motocross madness are its extended swingarm to make the bike stable on hill climbs and the tank-mounted exposed air filter. This production dirt bike will be made in collaboration with Cipala Racing and is deemed to be the guidance for future dirt and off-roading Buells. Buell has stated that the 1190HCR will be followed up by 1190 Baja Race and 1190 Baja Adventure models which would be devoid of the extended swingarm.

2023 Buell 1190 Super Touring - For The Roads Less Travelled

The Buell 1190 Super Touring is still in its concept stage but the brief is quite impressive on this one. It will also share the same powerplant as its 2021 counterparts and even get the perimeter frame and frame-rail fuel storage. This might look like a fresh take on adventure motorcycling from Buell but they did try a hand at it before in 2004 with the Buell Ulysses which packed a Harley-Davidson-derived engine. After that EBR also had an adventure offering in the pipeline for 2018 called the 1190AX but was axed after it went down in financial turmoil.

The 2023 Buell 1190 Super Touring flaunts a neo-retro design language and looks rather intimidating in the all-black render. The well-sized front visor and panniers show us of its practical pedigree and the knobby tires do look like its ready to take on the trails. The render has been created in collaboration with iconic designer J. Ruiter who is known for his eccentric and boxy design elements. To give consumers, Buell Motorcycles will be releasing a touring kit for the 1190SX which will be a derivate from the 1190 Super Touring.
